E: E Live (vinyl) - GLOBUS 210008-131 - £8.30 Excellent self-produced LP of very stretched, intense, minimal and well constructed Rock-form pieces. Fine performances and good recording...of a live concert, extraordinarily - hence the hair-raising intensity at times. Simple, and always on the edge. Pieces for Prepared Piano by EARLE BROWNE and M.B., who is a master of Piano preparation. His own two pieces are for two and three pianos respectively. Side 2. CARTRIDGE MUSIC by John Cage, where M.B. amplifies 'small sounds' with gramophone cartridges fitted with all manner of materials - revealing a massive sound world in the tiniest of objects and movements. BLEGVAD, PETER: Downtime (vinyl) - ReR 34 - £8.30 Compiled over two years without the pressure of Peter's major label releases, giving time for the songs and for Peter's singing to speak for themselves. More 'personal' and less obviously commercial, with playing and production dedicated to the song, rather than trying to shape a surface that should do well in the marketplace. The result is sometimes eccentric, often subtle, generally always a little surprising. + CHRIS CUTLER, TONY MAIMONE, JOHN GREAVES, MICK HOBBS, STOFFER BLEGVAD and others.. Full text booklet. BODIN: Clouds (vinyl) - FYLP 1020 - £8.30 Interesting pieces, voice and choral work. Compiled from a cache of surviving studio tapes, all of which have been remastered because, simply, this was a great moment in the life of a great group; quintessence of all I found most essential in the late 70's.Short, stretched lifetime-in-a-flash songs and, you know, Rock Music so you play it loud. Behind is a lot of thought - or something - and experiment inside the form. Incomparable. JONSSON, LACH'N: Songs From The Cities Decay (vinyl) - BAR 8901 - £8.30 An excellent LP. These are extended songs, with a wealth of instrumental and performance material as well as treated and arranged 'sound'. KOSK,HIIDENKARI, VUORI, NEVANLINNA: (vinyl) - ERZ 3004 - £8.30 Four radiophonic works, produced in the experimental studio of the Finnish broadcasting Co. Electronic and Concrete works, beautifully recorded. The sidelength 'Transmissions in A' is particularly noteworthy, mixing treated and natural sounds somewhere between narrative and dream. KOVAC, BORIS: Ritual Nova 2. (vinyl) - PE 01 - £7 A rich and folk tempo-ed work built from ethnic and electronic sounds and instruments. Layered and always at root folkloristic harmonic constructions with an extraordinary sense of pace and inner dynamic. KRCEK, JAROSLAV: Raab (vinyl) - RR 23 - £7 Prizewinner of the Concours Internationale De L'Opera et Ballet, Geneva 1971. This is a concrete opera, or 'psychodramatic representation', of the fall of Jericho. Characters don't sing; there is instead expressive speaking in invented tongues with Musique Concrete interludes. Made over 13 months (450 hours) at the Electronic Music Studio, Prague and then put on ice. We waited 5 years to get it. Book with full notes, texts and background material. KRZISNIK, BORUT: Currents of Time (vinyl) - PE 06 - £7 Beautifully recorded CLOCKS and CLOUDS music; intricate and intelligent. Instrumental pieces, verging on the modern, but with wilder, more abstract, sections. Extremely listenable and stimulating work. LACHENMANN, HELMUT: Pression. Guero. Gran torso (vinyl) - ERZ 1003 - £8.30 Intense and radical pieces - especially the two (Pression /Guero) for solo instruments in which notes play virtually no part, but where sound, dynamics, novel techniques are uppermost, though in all cases subservient to a strong formal and expressive aesthetic. Virtuosic performances in unpopulated territory. MARCLAY, CHRISTIAN: More Encores - ReR CM1 - £11 Turntable/plunder CLASSIC, featuring Jimi Hendrix, Maria Callas, Johann Strauss, John Zorn, John Cage, Martin Denney, Fred Frith, Frederick Chopin, Louis Armstrong, Ferrante ∓ Teicher, Birkin ∓ Gainsbourg and CM himself...This is the big one. QUATRE GUITARISTES: Fin De Siecle (vinyl) - ReR 42 - £8.30 'Fin' finds Roger replaced by CLAUDE FRADETTE - and FERDINAND RICHARD and REMI LECLERC added. 'Fin' includes commissioned work from FRED FRITH and LARS HOLLMER - and BARTOK string quartet transcriptions. RACAILLE/PORTELLA: Les Flots Bleus (vinyl) - RR 16 - £7 Joseph was 33.33% of ZNR. One side = multiple horn pieces, the other short songs for piano and horns. The shade of Erik Satie hovers; eccentric, charming and not a little odd... RADULESCU, HORATIU: Astray/Clepsydra (vinyl) - ERZ 1007 - £8.30 More close and hyperclose sound, modulations of timbre and subtle grades of tone. 'Astray' in particular is a perfect example of a rarely managed form: unfolding stillness. Limited Edition Vinyl £10 A rare recording of this seminal project, released strangely on vinyl. A document. Very few left, first come first served I’m afraid. SCHERCHEN, HERMAN: Orchestra Proben Beethoven 6 (vinyl) - ERZ 6001 - £8.30 As the title indicates this is a recording of rehearsals for Radio Televisione Della Svizzera Italiana of parts of Beethoven's 'Pastorale'. The recording is excellent and Scherchen's commentary, exhortation, inspiration, clarity and grasp of the score exciting to listen to - mostly in Italian, sprinkled with German; this doesn't matter; the whole thing is intensely musical and although decidedly odd, moving. SERIOUS SOLID SWINEHERD: Sohn Onsens (vinyl) - OW 017 - £8.30 SHEA, DAVID: Land of Pure Illusions (vinyl) - QUANTUM 121 - £8.30 SOCIETY FOR FUTURE RESEARCH: Same (vinyl) - UTR 4036 - £8.30 11 Musicians, including string quartet. Excellent record of diverse, but coherent, developments; from impressive piano and string quartet writing to sharp rhythmic stutters through instrumental harmonies, virtuosic solo sections and big band passages, this LP always keeps to the point (Self produced, limited supply) SNSTEVELD, KNUT: Bassoon (vinyl) - FYLP 1011 - £11 Fascinating record of mostly solo and processed Basson, using specially designed live electronic system, connecting bassoon to a number of devices directly controlled by the player. Also 'Solo for melody instrument and feedback' by KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN and a piece for Bassoon and Tape. SPAHLINGER, MATHIAS: Morendo Entloeschend, (vinyl) - ERZ 1005 - £8.30 Six very different pieces. Entloeschend for giant Tam Tam, disposing an enormous range of sounds; as if electronic or concrete; Stoerung for interference and distortion; Sotto Voce for choir (sound/drama, not notes) with concrete interludes of quotidian sounds. SIDE 2: Dense and discontinuous orchestral net woven from small groups and silences. Exquisite recording and pressing. Full notes. STRANGE GAMES: Strange Games (vinyl) - PE 03 - £7 A legend in their own time, Strange Games were one of the first underground groups to concentrate on arrangement and theatre as well as texts. Witty, intelligent songs, always on the brink of anarchy, but still toe-tapping. TEITELBAUM/ZINGARO: The Sea Between (vinyl) - VICTO CD 003 - £8.30 TONE DOGS: Ankety Low Day (vinyl) - CZ016 - £8.30 See misc for description. UNGVARY, TAMAS: Ite, Missa est (vinyl) - FYLP 1028 - £11 UNREST, WORK ∓ PLAY: In-Forms (vinyl) - RR C19 - £7 The only recordings of this shortlived but important group. In-Forms is a particularly accomplished work, mangling ∓ renewing 'In' Forms. Full of ideas and excellent playing. UNREST, WORK ∓ PLAY: Sound every Day (12-inch EP) (vinyl) - PU3 - £4.25 See above WHA HA HA: Wha Ha Ha (vinyl) - RR 17 - £7 Compiled from three great and ephemeral records from the master Japanese group whose music never appeared in the occident. This group were a revelation: daring dub mixes, sudden changes, humour, virtuosic playing; extreme; very musical and pretty eccentric. Not to be missed. Nimbus pressing WORK, THE: Rubber Cage (vinyl) - WOOF 012 - £8.30 ZGA: Zga (vinyl) - PE 02 - £7 This is an extraordinary record from a group who build their own instruments from metal, springs, transducers, electronic parts, as well playing more conventional instruments unconventionally. Somewhere between electronic contemporary composition and a kind of subliminal rock sensibility that emerges now and then in surprising guises. See also ReR ZNR: Barricades 3 (vinyl) - RR 7 - £8.30 The legendary first LP. One of the more extraordinary groups of all time, bizarre, minimal, satiesque, les six and Brasilian echoes, clear as crystal, completely impenetrable, innocent and ironic. There never was before, nor has been ever again anything quite like it. See also ReR Back to index |
