PALE NUDES, THE:  Wise To The Heat - RECDEC 71 - £12.50
Amy Denio, Wadi Gysi, Mitch Gerber and Will Dowd in a post- (ec) Nudes Nudes. More 'acoustic' and much less experimental than the (ec) Nudes, but smoothly listenable. Well recorded and the addition of contrabasse is a plus. Usual good performance from Tone Dog Dowd.
THE PALE ORCHESTRA: Mirror Man Act 1 - Cook CD 175 - £12.75
The Orchestra: Andy Diagram, Keith Moline, Peter Hammil, Chris Cutler, Jack Kidney, David Thomas. Singers and speakers: Robert Kidney, Linda Thompson, David Hild Jackie Leven, Jane Bom-bane, David Thomas. Commentary and voiceover: Bob Holman. In July 1998 David Thomas programmed three days of Disastodrome at London's Southbank. The centrepiece was David's epic journey into the heartland where it's all road and sky and one-horse towns on the outside and failure, deserts and tumbleweed on the inside. There are great stories and texts here, daring to be openly poetic. And songs winding in and out of them. On their way to somewhere and an unusual and courageous experiment with form. Bob's Kidney and Holman are a revelation and it is wonderful to hear Linda Thompson back on the boards. This is more than a record. Sorry about price – Cooking Vinyl!

PALINCKX:  Naked girls from Tilburg - VONK 5 - £12
Fine new CD focussing the group's current musical techniques, reminiscent of Zorn's COBRA games only planned and honed into strings of gems. A unique mixture of the banal and the exquisite. A group with more than its fair share of virtuosi.

PALINCKX:  Llllivvvvve!!!! - VONK 4 - £12
P with friends, including Guus Janssen, Peter Van Bergen, DNA, The Mondrian Quartet and the ubiquitous LoL Coxhill (whose 'Murder in the Air extract' is truly magnificent). Organised and otherwise chaos with strong musical undertow.

PALINCKX:  The Psychedelic Years - VONK6 - £12
The Concept Album: Tilburg's finest here augmented with appropriate French Horn, Woodwinds, Strings, Classical percussion and hard to decipher psychedelic packaging. Working through a time-slice of Soft Machine/ Zappa/ Barrett/ Brian Wilson/ Soul and a vast mass of generic late 60's psychedelia in 13 'Phases' to produce, not a series of a 'covers' but a thoroughly considered and composed piece about a musical and cultural moment; there's so much stuff in here and it's so mixed up...(hear the classic Barrett- Wilson morph in track 2). Deadly serious/tongue in cheek/not to be judged by existing criteria/ as kitchy as its mentors...

PALINCKX:  Border, Live in Zurich - INTAKT CD 043 - £12
Contains some (different) live versions of 1. (fascinating comparisons/food for thought) and a great deal of other material. Great concert, well recorded. Get both CD's is my advice.

PALINCKX:  It's Frontal Dog - VICTO 061 - £12

PALO ALTO:  Trash et Arteres - FOS 001 - £11
Interesting and well recorded collection of varied pieces, rich, pure sound, of compositions and assemblages of played and manipulated instruments, tapework and surprises. No revolution but very good work. Nicely presented.

PALO ALTO:  Grands Succedanes (20 min) - OCD 002 - £8.30

PARKS, VAN DYKE:  Discover America - X26145-2 - £11.50
A Classic - and cheap!

PARKS, VAN DYKE:  Jump CD - X23829-2 - £11.50
For my money one of the truly great records of the last quarter century. But an acquired taste.

PARKS, VAN DYKE:  Clang of the Yankee Reaper - X26185-2 - £11.50
Collection of West Indian pieces, reworked and brilliantly arranged.

PARTCH, HARRY:  Enclosure 5 (3xCD box and book) - INNOVA 405 - £24.90
Another unmissable classic toward a complete works. Includes: the unusually scored 'Ulysses Departs from the Edge of the World' and Revelation in the Courthouse Park, King Oedipus, The Bewitched, Menuet, Come Away Death, By the Rivers of Babylon, as well as spoken introductions by Partch himself. With an excellent 40 page booklet. Indispensible. Over 3 and three quarter hours of music...some of it still seriously surprising..
PAUL DUNMALL OCTET:  Bebop Starburst - RUNE 112 - £11.50
PAULO ANGELI: Linee Di Fuga - ERH 012 - £12
An excellent and imaginative collection of pieces for Sardinian Guitar (larger and tuner lower than the Spanish variety) to which Paulo has added 12 pickups (in order to be able to treat the sound from each string and various parts of the instrument individually) a foot-board linked to the strings for simultaneous rhythmic accompaniment and electric motors. All manner of techniques are applied to both composed and improvised pieces. The possibilities of the instrument are thoroughly explored. A mature and definitive record.
PEKKA POHJOLA:  Live in Japan - BELL 95109 - £15.50
PERE UBU:  Datapanic in the Year Zero (5cd box) - DGCD5 24969 - £44
Can you be without this? ALL the classic early singles PLUS Modern Dance, Dub Housing, New Picnic Time, Art of Walking, Bailing man, 360 Degrees of Simulated Stereo, PLUS 74 minutes 'Terminal Drive' - which is a snapshot of the early Cleveland bands, mostly involving UBU members, Thomas, Laughner, Ravenstine, Krauss, Jones, Herman as well as Ralph Carney, Anton Fier, The Numbers Band and a lot of others. Two unreleased Rocket from the Tombs tracks. All in a large BOX with a beautifully designed and very informative booklet, including archive photos and facsimiles. Six hours of The Goods. A completely indispensable item.
PERFUME DE MUJER: Pollos D'Granja - CDLNO 6 - £12
Still active Cuban 'Progressive Rock' legends, employing some extended recording techniques and experiments, made both in studios and concerts in Havana.
PERIL:  AstroPeril - RED NOTE 5 - £12
See below.

PERIL:  Multiverse - SFCD 015 - £12
Peril is Australian Tony Buck (drums, samples, machines), Otomo Yoshihide (turntables, guitar), Sheridan (Guitar) and Thierry Fosmale (Bass). Strong ordered chaos at its best, where real and cooked sounds disappear into one another: the difficult art of colour profusion without brown sludge, and a model of maximum information and mutation that continually surprises and stimulates. A prodigious work and highly recommended. Hong Kong label.

PETERSON, GUDMUNDUR: Muzac - PYCD 001 - £12
Post Zappa-experimental work from Icelandic Guitarist-composer Peterson. Intelligent and alert music, with musical rather than machine thinking to the fore. Unusual musical values in this day and age. Recommended.
PFS:  279 - RUNE 22 - £11.50
PHANTASMAGORIA: Phantasmagoria - ICR 007 - £12
Uchihashi Kasuhisa again with a big band (actually Contrabass, Drums, Guitar, Sampler, Trombone, Trumpet
and Alto Sax, but it sounds bigger - blame the sampler player). Big Jazz, Rock, Noise, some classical and other genres (blame the sampler player) and - I don't know. This is what is great about some recent Japanese groups. Totally fearless. Not afraid to be straight. Or eccentric. Very good indeed. On his own label. Scarce.
PHEW:  Himitsu No Knife - CMDD 00010 - £14.99
ANOTHER GREAT Japanese singer - wonderful songs and arrangements on all three records. 1 includes Otomo Yoshihide on many tracks, Japanese pressing - A classic.

PHEW:  Phew - DSA 54016 - £12
Phew_ Includes Can members JAKI LIEBEZEIT and HOLGER CZUKAY.

PHEW:  View - DSA 54021 - £12

PHILHARMONIE:  Nord - RUNE 64 - £11.50

PHILHARMONIE: Le Dernier Mot - Rune 124 - £11.50

PHILLIPIS, ALAIN DE:  Ton Dieu etc... - MKCD 013 - £4.25
PHILLIPS, BARRE:  Camouflage - VICTO CD 08 - £12
PICCHIO DAL POZZO:  Abbiamo Tutti I Suoi Problemi - KICP 2841 - £16
This was one of the great groups of the 70's, for my money (some will recall their magnificent 'Ucello del Bosco' on our sampler). Some audible Zappa influence, but this in passing, Picchio had a unique and highly developed style of composition that was not only out of step with it's own time but which sounds contemporary still. Highly composed and devoid of jazz phrasing and riffs with solos, this record achieves maximum musical effect with minimum instrumental means through close attention to timbre, dynamics and expressed tempi and a kind of deep complexity that sounds simple but changes with each listening. Rich and strange; a lot of ideas subtly developed rather than experimented with; in fact a one-off classic. We are still trying to licence this ourselves. Meanwhile here is a handful of expensive and rare Japanese copies.

Volumes 5, 6, 8, 9 of the works.
PNEUMA:  Psychabuse - BELL 9588 - £15.50
THE POSITIVE NUNS: The Bible Two - p.05 - £12
Bits of Blast and Otholithen, Dirk Bruinsma, Frank Crijns and Jim Meneses as a complexity rock power trio. Fast and furious. Great sound and fine playing, but you have to like the form which is pretty in-your-face.
PORTELLA, PATRICK:  Winterreise - GMEME102 - £12.50
Patrick Portella (of ZNR and Les Flots Blues fame) here with an extremely radical reworking of Schubert's 'Winterreisse'. Electronics, Plunder, environs and the hair-raising voice of Brigitte Balian. A 20 minute miniature gem, tightly focused and sharply realised. Exactly - A winter journey.
POUSSEUR/DE WINDT:  Eisler/Brecht - SR 67 - £12.55
PRESENT:  Triskaidekaphobie/Le poisson - RUNE 17 - £11.50

PREVOST, EDDIE:  Locus of Change - MRCD 32 - £11.50
PREVOST, EDDIE's SILVER PYRAMID: Directed by Keith Rowe. £12 - MRCD 40
Historic recording from Music Now festival London 1969, icludes Cardew, Gare, Prevost etc.
PREVOST/ORGANUM:  Flayed/Crux - MRCD 27 - £11.50
PREVOST, ROWE, GARE, CARDEW and a small orchestra of others: Silver Pyramid - MRCD40 - £12
Historic recording from the 1969 Music Now concert of (effectively) an expanded AMM (expanded vastly – 40+ listed, many later to be involved in the Scratch Orchestra). It captures eloquently the excitement of discovering a new – undirected - way to work with sound that has now become familiar but was then a revelation. The difference is everything: discovery excites, repetition bores; this pins the discovery.
PRIME, MICHAEL:  Cellular Radar - SPOR 01 - £12
PROVINI, HERVE: Biological and Chaotic Music - UTR 4116 - £12
Insufficient sleeve notes are provided to this very interesting record for drums and computer based on bio-mathematical alogrithms. On the "Biological" tracks the computer plays piano and the effect is mysterious and very engaging - sets of rhythms and counter rhythms sounding like conventional kit and piano played in real time but indefinably unjazzy - un-anything - while remaining exiting and highly musical. The 2 "Chaotic" pieces have the computer also playing flute-sounds and a greater complexity of structure and simultaneous lines. All manner of musics emerge and submerge as it unfolds in its protean shape-shifting course. I think this is an important and exemplary record. Maximum stars.
PUBLIC WORKS:  Music with Sound - DOVE CD 44 - £12
PULNOC:  Pulnoc - G210011-2311 - £12
The Plastic People as was. Now with a new name but the same commitment to a special kind of Rock that retains the clarity and simplicity of their influences (Velvet Underground/Reed especially) - and no inverted commas. Czech Pressing.
PUSH PULL:  PushPull - SONG 1001 - £12
Eccentrically played and interrupted blues-rock-jazz- sort-of-thing, gone terribly wrong, but in a unique and fascinating way. Well played, funny, imaginative and one-of-a-kind vignettes. Interesting.

At last these classic works have been made available, not by the BBC but by the folk label Topic Records. Between 1958 and 1964 Ewan Mcoll, Peggy Seeger and Charles Parker completed eight revolutionary radio programmes, inventing, on the way, a new radiophonic form, which they called Radio Ballads. These programmes were painstakingly constructed from interviews, location sound recordings, folk songs, specially written songs, sung narrative and customised composed instrumental music. Together these form complex and extraordinary narratives and impressions of - in order of their making - the railways, road-building, fishing, mining, illness, adolescence, boxing and gypsy life. Description cannot do justice to these pieces, I can only recommend trying one and seeing how it goes - for instance The Fight Game or Singing the Fishing. Or whatever topic appeals. These are historic and great recordings that capture times and cultures already disappearing. But more than that they are profoundly connected to the people and situations they speak with and for. I can't praise them too highly. Please note that the texts are crucial and they are all in English.

RASCEP: Act Out - Actout1 - £12
Fine Polish sort of rockish sometimes a bit jazzish group who show that there is still life in the old line-ups where straight ahead playing plus imagination continue to produce surprising, satisfying and convincing results.
RATTE, MICHAEL:  Passages et Derives - AMIM 941 - £12
This is improvised music on the rare pattern of the late '60's: clean, confident, decentred, dry, 'composed', intentional, like independent worlds that make a kind of hyper-sense. Beautifully made and very open listening. main instruments are percussion and prepared percussion, electronics and some direct electroacoustic manipulations. Strong on concept and economic in realisation. Refreshing.
RATTLEMOUTH:  Fistfull of Iffy - RUNE 101 - £11.50

RATTLEMOUTH:  Walking a Full Moon Dog - RUNE 81 - £11.50

RAWFRUCHT:  Rawfrucht - SR 99 - £12.55
REBELO, NUNO:  Sabado 2. Minimal Show - GGG001 - £11.50
Very very good collection of pieces written for theatre by ex avant-garde groupist, now art-purpose composer (a kind of Portugese Fred Frith would be very fair). Excellent - for all kinds of Guitars, Percussion, Keyboards, Horns, Samples. 26 pieces...Sound explorations, Close Compositions, Open pieces, Strongly rhythmical pieces, Pure Eccentricities; always to the point. I'd buy it.
REBELO, NUNO:  Azul Esmerelda - LLL 011 - £12
Second CD from this unusual guitarist and composer. Comparisons are invidious but Nuno works in a territory similar in some ways to Fred Frith's soundtrack work. And this CD is in fact music made for dance, often impressionistic and abstract, but always clearly focused.
REICHEL, HANS:  7-inch EP From Table of the Elements (vinyl) - BE4 - £4.25
RENALDO/HOOKER/'OROARKE:  Clouds - VICTOCD 054 - £12
REPECAUD, DAILLEAU, PEY:  Complexe de la Viande - 33 revpermi 2003 - £12
Minimal played noise (electric guitar, theremin) and text (in French) very well done. Kept me listening.

RHYS, PIOTR - MIASTO NIE SPALO: Piesni Zalobne 1-VII - OBUH D10 £7
Beautiful pieces for Contrabass, Violin and Accordion. Slow, rich moving harmonies, almost dreamy but not at all romantic; almost dry, with an underlying rigour. Strange and moving, perhaps because so inconclusive, straightforward - and profoundly unsentimental. Rare and exquisite music.

Beautiful pieces for Contrabass, Cello and Accordion. OK ?

Musak Classics rub trolleys with location damage, packaging oratoria, consumer angst, catalogue fetishism, Soft soap, An in - store guide and more muzak. ROSE, JON:  China Copy - CRG 10 - £12
Made in Australian ABC radio using site recordings (key copiers, people's musical instrument factory, street cries, radio, Chinese opera etc) that John made while in the people's republic in 1994.

ROSE, JON: Fringe Benefits - an Australian archive 1977-1985 (Double CD) - ESR 006 - £18
2 CDs that only Jon could have assembled, featuring as it does 70 tracks of average 2 minutes each, though many are shorter ("Fly trapped in violin" clocks in at 12 secs) and a few longer. As the title indicates this is a snapshot tour of 8 Australian years of chaos, mayhem and profound investigations (extraordinary what was going on down there while we were busy with punk and the new romantics). Featuring a lot of guests, a catalogue of invented instruments (10 string violin, 16 string long neck ditto, wheeling violin, triple neck double piston ditto, various installations, tromba mariner, very long strings, electronics, cheap crap, 10 string double violin, rational viola, ironing board and a number of others) recorded with cattle trains, rivers, rubberneckers, surf, amplified leg, traffic accidents, runway ambiance, parrots, over the telephone and in various clubs, galleries and conservatoria. 2 rare Doc Rosenberg sightings here too - one in church (at the organ) and a band appearance at the Blacktown workers club. Nicely edited together and with an informative book, in which for once you can believe everything that is written. An economical and welcome document.

ROSE, JON et al:  Shopping List - LOST 007 - £12
Rare as gold-dust

ROSE, JON/ OTOMO YOSHIHIDE:  Tatakiuri - CMDD 00017 - £14.99
NEW!!!!!!!!!!! First release on Otomo's own label. Being the 'point-of-sales' Japanese chapter of Jon's epic fin de siecle shopping documentation series. Can you afford to miss it ? COLLECT THE SET!!!!!!! I just can't believe that SUPER BARGAIN price for a japanese import.
ROSE, JON/MUSICA IMAGINE:  Rosenberg's Revised Timetables - ERH 004 - £12
Jon with the massed forces of LMI - a lot of Italian text with accompaniments - a radio piece more than a music piece, I think. Another block in the Rosenberg edifice, plus 47 page booklet with the TIMETABLES in Italian and English (a good read!). Nice packaging.

ROSE, JOHN/MIYA MASAOKA: NAIAM £12.50 Unheard at time of writing...but...

ROVA SAXOPHONE QUARTET:  Ptow! - VICTO CD040 - £12
ROWE, KEITH:  A Dimension of .. - MR 19 - £11.50
AMM guitarist and radio player at last with a solo work. Many have been influenced by his techniques (Syd Barratt and Fred Frith to name two) but seldom has he received the attention that is surely his due. But it is the musical conception and the sonic and expressive minutiae of the performance that matter here; in this Keith Rowe is sans pareil.
ROWE, KEITH - GUNTHER MULLER - TAKU SUGIMOTO:  The World Turned Upside Down - erstwhile 005 - £12
Long, suspended soundscapes where only Taku's sometimes tinkling, sometimes chiming guitar indicates human occupation. Dreamlike in that it doesn't engage with the listener and therefore declines to lead the ear around preferring instead to melt away endlessly - as sound intrinsically does - but leaving no traces in the mind as music typically tries to do. Nice work. And a fine cover by Keith.
ROWE, KEITH /JEAN CHEVALIER / CHRISTOPHE HAVARD / JULIEN OTTAVI: N:Q - Fibrr - £12
A CD for playing at low level (it's low level even when loud)...an environment. This quartet has achieved a total absence of focus, a concentrated emptiness of content. It happens. And is not easy to achieve. Hats off. Others will find it irritating, without edges. With limited edition litho print.
RUSSIAN-GERMAN COMPOSERS QUARTET:  Not Only For - LEO LAB CD 033 - £11.50
Interesting item from the brave Leo Lab features widely various pieces by and for this group of 2 Russian and two German composer/performers - from the improvisation/experimental axis - for violin, viola, prepared piano, pianos, synthesiser, bells, accordion. Unexpected and interesting musical language, dtevelops through a procession organised and extemporised tableaux of imaginative and engaging diversity.
SACHIKO M: Sine wave Solo - AMO SAT 01 - £12
As it suggests, extremes of duration high and low frequencies, silences, disruption made only of sine tones.
SACHIKO M, OTOMO YOSHIHIDE, YASUHIRO OTANI, MARTIN TETREAULT:
Four Focusses - AMO SAT 02 - £12
More Ultra radical tracking of pure 'non-musical' and 'unwanted' sounds, clicks, distortion, pure tones. Very stripped.
SACHIKO M, GUNTHER MULLER, OTOMO YOSHIHIDE: Filament 2 - CD1031 - £12.50
Super minimal, small sound disturbances and events. Dreamy but not droney, radical but not aggressive. Hard to do well but they do it really well. I like it.
SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA
Classic reissues. The Samlas were one of the 5 original RIO groups and _For Aldre Nybegynnare/Schlagerns Mystik_ especially goes in my book as absolutely indispensible: magnificent playing, great composition, prescient arrangements, stunning improvisation (amongst the best ever recorded by a 'rock' group) and a repeated listening pleasure.

SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA:  Schlagerns Mystik (dbl) - SRSCD 3610 - £22

SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA:  Familjesprickor - SRSCD 3613 - £12
Composed, more 'chamber' style compositions and also great. Joined by Univers Zero Bassoonist Michel Berckmans.. Klossa Knapitatet and Zamlaranamma are also exceptional. Classic.

SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA:  Maltid - SRSCD 505 - £12
Their first LP, also great, though more audibly like 'progressive' additive rythmn rock. And cheerful. With 3 Extra tracks

SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA:  Klossa Knapitatet - SRSCD 3617 - £12

SAMMLA - VON ZAMLA:  Zamlaranamma - RESCD 511 - £12
Another great record

SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA: Kaka - AMCD 884 - £12
Major event - a new Samla CD, like they'd never been away, except older and wiser. I can't praise this record too highly: the compositions are - as ever - great, the improvised episodes extraordinary, the editing and compilation inspired (mingling studio, live recording and occasional radio 3 style announcements). The sound is perfect, the playing exemplary, the mood joyful/eccentric. This is played somewhere-out-of-rock music pretty much as good as it gets. A gale of sweet air. Serious fun. Enough... I expect you all to buy this.

SAUTER, JOSS ∓ BITTERLIN: Toy - UTR 4130 CD - £12
Guitar (acoustic and electric), bass, drums, a little African, a little jazz, a little pop A very charming record, mildly reminiscent of the great Steve Newman. Strange that the sleeve notes apologise for its simplicity, which is its charm.

SEEWALD,ZAHAVA and PSAMIM:  Ashkenaz Songs - SR 89 - £12.55
SELFISH, BING:  Binging It All Back Home - OUT27 - £12
A masterpiece. Bing is a phenomenon in the galaxy of songsters today sure his so-called fans pelted him with slurry for 'going electric' but the last laugh will be on them you'll see. Wherever form meets content, text meets gesture, ideologically armed lush meets historical destiny, there you'll find Bing wagging something. However, 'experimental' it's not.
SER UN PEYJALERO:  U - PANTON 81112 - £12
Another interesting Czech group (this seems to be a prime productive centre for rock experiments). Shades of Magma at times, of epic film music, of minimalism. A wide range of instruments, all played and not sampled. Broad, varied and high quality work. Pity about the packaging.
SERIOUS SOLID SWINEHERD Inventive and eccentric songs. Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Drums and miscellaneous extras. A solid body of work in the extended rock form which includes versions of Eisler, Residents and Beatles, outrageous Beefheart style instrumentals, noise experiments. Big sound, arranged music, simplicity and complexity. Nice work. Don't be put off by the unfortunate name.

SERIOUS SOLID SWINEHERD:  Swine Art - UTON 11 - £12
Second CD from this excellent German trio. Studio productions of played and arranged pieces, mostly songs (echoes: Skeleton Crew, Cassiber ?). An unusual meeting of skills and styles where very different interests somehow collect and make musical sense. Intelligence, variety and fine playing underwrite complex/simple songs and extended successful recording experiments. Rock, stretched.

SERIOUS SOLID SWINEHERD: Clapham Junction - AMF 1046 - £12.75
Also excellent.

SERIOUS SOLID SWINEHERD:  Simple Songs + Hard Beats - WRS 003 - £11
Also excellent.

SERIOUS SOLID SWINEHERD:  Dance with the Skeletons in Hell - SPV 084-175 342 - £12
A new CD is a rare but very welcome event from this to-hell-with-fashion ensemble of players happy to be doing great work somewhere between rock and jazz whose compositions and arrangements are always to the point - and consistently executed in a highly engaged and musical way. Here they move toward the Charlie Mingus zone of rock - amazingly good recording since it's live. Added horns work perfectly (some great trumpet). Brave and Uncompromising work.

SHABOTINSKI:  Steinmals - PLAG DICH NICHT 007 - £12
This label continues to release highly interesting works. This is a mixture of techno or ambient styles now and then with songs, melodic inventions and interesting playing...
SHAKING RAY LEVIS, THE:  False Prophets - INCUS CD13 - £12
???
SHAMS:  Burghan Interference - SLAMCD 238 - £12
Shams is Tim Hodgkinson and Ken Hyder, who have worked together for a lot of years and achieved a musical understanding that is both sure-footed and elliptical. This makes for a particular kind of narrative coherence, based, at best, more on synchronicity than accompaniment - and on the maintenance of a tension that seldom descends into the merely musical. Use of the voice is crucial to the Shams dramaturgy - so that you mostly keep hold of the personalities. That's a hard number to pull off. This is a music you are required to play too, by switching off the music critic and narrowing down your time horizon. Some sections are more conventional but where level two kicks in, it's well worth the ride.

SHIRLEY ANNE HOFMANN'S EUPHORIA:  From the Depths - LUS 001 - £12
Stretched songs by many brass (not reed), marimba, piano, accordion, sampler player and singer Hofmann - a major talent - with Pippin Barnett (drums, percs) featuring an enormous variety of styles and structures and a fine use of sonorities. A very musical and imaginative collection, full of good humour - and a pleasure to listen to. Recommended.
SOCHA IRENEUSZ:  With/Without - order by name - £12
4 pieces (15 tracks). One alone, one with Joanne Hetu (Vox, sax), one with Marek Choloniewski, Boleslaw Blaszczyk (cello, piano). Ireneusz plays drums and samples throughout. Interesting and varied, with fine moments. Rare Polish home-made CD.
SIAMESE STEP BROTHERS:  Siamese Step Brothers - RUNE 72 - £11.5
SIGIS BRUDER:  Leftovers - TROST 027 - £12
Two people (and some guests) construct highy original and very substantial 'songs', from samples, treatments and some instruments all highly economically deployed.

SLAWTERHAUS:  Live - VICTO CD 013 - £12
SLEDE ZIVE SLEDE: Cherie Sculpte les Paysage - SON 06 - £12
In the Czech style, the basic trio is Contrabass/Voice, Bassoon/Clarinet, Saxophone/Voice, Guitar/Voice. These are organised compositions and pretty eccentric. Engaging, original and considered. Unclassical, unjazz and unrock. With plenty of guest players: Guitars, Bass, Trumpet, Violin, Sitar. Very nice work indeed.

SLEDE ZIVE SLEDE: Plants - MAM 133-2 - £12
Start with this one. A fascinating and unique approach to composition and sound. See above.

SOCHA IRENEUSZ:  With/Without - order by name - £12
4 pieces (15 tracks). One alone, one with Joanne Hetu (Vox, sax), one with Marek Choloniewski, Boleslaw Blaszczyk (cello, piano). Ireneusz plays drums and samples throughout. Interesting and varied, with fine moments. Rare Polish home-made CD.
SOFT MACHINE:  Spaced - RUNE 90 - £11.50
This is the music recorded by the (Wyatt/Hopper/Ratledge) Soft Machine in 1969, consisting of specially recorded and subsequently manipulated (looped, mostly) material, made for a multimedia show at the Roundhouse. Shades of 'Third' are unmistakable, but more tapeworked than performed pieces (except for a long, treated improvisation (tk 4) and the mighty odd tk 6. Still fresh (sometimes downright prescient) and, of course, an important document recovered.

SOFT MACHINE:  Virtually - RUNE 100 - £11.50
Hot on the heels of 'Spaced'. This exceptional Cuneiform release contains late 'Third/Fourth' era Soft Machine pieces recorded for radio Bremen in March 1971. The drums are very clean and forward in the mix, and for this alone the CD is a fan must-have. Everyone is on late tour confident form and the recording is studio quality. Indispensable really.

SOGENANNTES LINKSRADIKALES BLASORCHESTER: Sogenanntes Linksradikales Blasorchester (double CD) - TRIKONT CD 0258-2 - £12.50
At last a reissue on (double) CD of these two great and unusual LP's. The SLB was set up by Heiner Goebbels, as a large, portable group comprising many wind players able to perform at a moments notice in the street, on stages and in diverse political situations. They played music by Eisler, Zappa, Trad, themselves (Goebbels, Hart, Reihm) in inventive and engaging arrangements. No playing down to the masses here (as with contemporaries like Peoples Liberation Music in the UK) but an appeal to the intelligence as well as the marching foot and harmonic ear. Eclectic, timbrically rich, imaginative and versatile, they blew fresh air into the somnolent, unambitious music scene of mid '70's Germany. Still incomparable, this double CD is a pleasure, an entertainment and a tribute to a group of people for whom engagement, fun and intelligence were inalienable. Names ReR regulars will recognise: Wolfgang Reihm, Christoph Anders, Alfred Harth and Ernst Stotzner. And spot the early Plunderphonic moments.
SONGS BETWEEN:  Cities and Waterholes - BAR 9303 - £7.24
3 Songs, 1 instrumental - 20 minutes of music - from the 1992 'Between' tour with Lars (Lach'n) Jonsson, Sten Standell, Nikolas Billstrom and Chris Cutler. 12cm CD from BAUTA, in a strictly limited numbered edition of 500 examples. Until they run out.
SONIC HIEROGLYPHS: From the Night Continent - SPLIT 3 - £12
Jim Denley and Rik Rue
SOYBELMAN, LEONID: Surfing in my Bed - rere 195 - £12
Leonid with Spanish Guitar, preparations, Piezos and Amp(s) finds extreme distortion, feedback and other enormous and extraordinary sounds, with the help of metal and wooden objects. A lot of terror, dedications to Otomo Yoshihide, Marc Ribot, Eugene Chadbourne and Ry Cooder. Powerful, if unremitting. Very charming cover/sleevenotes.
SPECCIO ENSEMBLE:  Suite No. 1 per Quintetto Doppio - CAI CAI 005 - £11
Title tells you, for double quintet (drums, Bass, Sax, Keyboards, Electric Guitars) Conducted and composed, with improvising. The Quintets pull every trick - playing together, intercut, bits of one and the other, and so on. Enough composition, arrangement and imagination to keep it fresh and enough inspired playing to drive it on. Great work.
SPECIES BEING:  Yonilicious - SB1 - £12
Fascinating and extremely well realised impro-sition.. Frank Grau recorded the entire structure as a drum/percussion track and from there this complex piece was built up in the studio (Bass, Guitars, Mellophone, Accordion, Keyboards, Melodica, Saxophone and stranger sources) by Frank and a few others. The result has the energy and detail of improvisation and the dynamic shape, considered structure and clarity of a composition. An intelligent and productive procedure, excellently realised. Independent artist release.
STAIANO, MOE: The non-study of first Impressions £12
A little diffuse sometimes, but with enough excellent parts to be well worth investigating. Moe is a percussionist, in the extended sense - bowls, springs, pipes, oil barrels, sheet metal, U-bolts, tuned pots, tractor blades, piano frame, a drum now and then and occasionally prepared guitar and effects.. Sometimes alone sometimes with guests - on guitar, Cello, Bass, Clarinets, Violin...
STANDELL, STEN:  Music from a waterhole - ALCD 005 - £12
A curious and unplaceable CD (for Piano, Organ, Harmonium, Sampling, Percussion - a lot of this, and often very radical - Electric Guitar and Lute). Close attention to sound and the compositional use of timbre, dynamics, overtones etc. Falls into a stylistic no-man's- land; sometimes rythmical, sometimes lyrical, some-times tense and stretched, or just downright odd. Interesting work. Nice cover art.

STANDELL, STEN:  Frames - BAR 9402 - £12
Serious and eccentric pieces for Piano, other keyboards, throat singing and small drums, some dollar brand, some nonworld music. Unlike anything I can think of.

STEWART, AMANDA: I/T Selected Poems - SPLIT 5 - £16
Box CD and Book
STEVE MACLEAN ENSEMBLE: Radial Circuit - Mobius 0233 - £12
Fascinating compositions at once minimal and rich - simple lineup produces subtly complicated results: Keyboards, Bass, Guitar and Drums. Some ZNR, some Conlon Nancarrow - really out of the general run of musics. A composer to get to know.

SUMO (sic): Sumo Home-burned CDR - Order by name - £12
All manner of acoustic and some electric instruments and samples, with Ry Cooder, blues, middle eastern echoes, as well as some electronic and recording manipulations. Subtle, thoughtful and musical - featuring songs, melody, harmony, timbre, subtle arrangements. It's well made and well played And while superficially fairly normal, it's actually pretty eccentric and very focussed. This is a home-burned CDR and in short supply.
SUN RA:  Mr Ra, Mystery (video) - RA VID3 - £14 SUN RA:  Solar Myth Approach Vols 1 and 2 - CDGR 294-2 - £17
Black Myth/Out in Space  - 557-658-2 - £20
Two immortal classics from the golden era of the Arkestra. The first, Solar Myth Approach, is the long out of print BYG double, unusually comprising a great set of studio recordings from 1970-71 featuring Ra on Moog, SpaceMaster and Clavinet (mistyped on the cover as clarinet). This was one of the greats, with various studio experiments included. The second, recorded at the 1970 Donaueschingen and Berlin Jazz festivals have Ra playing all his electronic keyboards with a classic 23 piece, incandescent, Arkestra. Black Myth is a reissue of the long unavailable "It's after the End of the World" LP with 9 long previously unreleased tracks added (restored from the original festival recordings) and two completed versions of tracks cut on the original LP. With excellent notes by the incomparable Hartmut Geerken. These are both breathtakingly good. And different.

SUN RA:  (3 CD BOX SET) - FREEDOM 7612-2 - £25
A gift. Spaceways, Outer Spaceways Incorporated, Planet Earth Calling. Recordings from classic era concerts 1966, 1968, 1971 with great versions of many of Ra's well known pieces as well as new materials unfolding in free flowing concert arrangements. Great recordings and a good documentation of this intensely creative period in the Arkestra's life. Well documented and amazingly cheap. Recommended.
