Online Order form

I.S.O.:  I.S.O. - AMO ISO 01 - £12
New formation with Ground Zero alumni Otomo Yoshihide and Sachiko Matsubara and interesting newcomer Ichiraku Yoshimitsu (drums, electronics). Slow, abstract, rich with extremes, ambient.

ICHIYANAGI, TOSHI/MAKI ISHII:  Music for a Living Process (vinyl) - EDRZ 1008 - £8.30

IL BERLIONE:  Il Berlione - BA 9229 - £15.50
50% fast and furious, clean and punchy, complex and super competent rock-kind-of-jazz-kind-of; convincing - 50% more jazz-rock as known.

IL BERLIONE:  453 Minites Infernal Cooking - BELL 9483 - £15.50
New work from Japanese group who play in the classic 'progressive' 70's style, and far better, technically, than any group of the period. But it is a period style - for fans of 'progressive' rock. No current European or American group plays like this now, nor could they quite in the 70's, so it's a strange double timewarp music; uniquely so. Impressive is probably the word.

IL GRAN TEATRO AMARO:  Piazza Orphelins - RECDEC 69 - £12.50

IL GRAN TEATRO AMARO:  Port-Famine - RECDEC 43 - £12.50

IL GRAN TEATRO AMARO:  Hotel Brennessel - RECDEC 56 - £12.50

ISLAND OF SANITY:  New Music NYC. - NML 8707CD - £12
Rare sampler from No Man's Land.

JABLKON:  Jablkon and Sveceny - B+N 9101 - £12
Acoustic guitars, bass, percussions, voices, Violin. Now a quartet, joined here by virtuoso violinist Jaroslav Sveceny. Eccentric and wide ranging; a mixture of breakneck tempi, stretched time, additive rythmns, melody, pinpoint percussion, simplicity and complexity. Conventum, Feliu Gasul, Albert Marcoeur come to mind, but this is a music unto itself, of rank eccentricity and quiet virtuosity. Highly recommended.

JABLKON:  Baba Aga - B+N 9202 - £12
New CD from the eccentric acousticians. Not easy to clasify. Whoever heard the last will know what to expect. Newcomers I'd still advise to listen to JABLKON and SVECENY first. Two new releases.

JABLKON:  Symphonic - F1 0003-2031 - £12
As the title implies, Jablkon had the Czech Symphony Orchestra to play with - and violin maestro Jaroslav Sveceny. 11 pieces. A curiosity with some fine parts. Someone did a monstrous amount of work for this. A document

JABLKON:  Machalaj - BABA N9504 - £12
More as known.

JAMES, BOB TRIO:  Explosions. - ESP 1009-2 - £12.50
Welcome CD reissue of an extraordinary, even prophetic, 1965 recording (originally on the legendary ESP label) featuring: Tapes, noise, experimental playing techniques and silence. Pre-echoes of AMM. An important musical document as well as a listening pleasure.

JARBOE:  Warm liquid..(CD single) - SR 64 - £12.55

JELLYFISH KISS, THE:  Luna Hotel - RECDEC 63 - £12.50

JILALA & GNAOVA:  Moroccan Trance Music - SUBCD0 13-36 - £12.55

JOHAN HUIZING QUARTET:  Live at Da Capo - DC7 - £12.75

JON and UTSUNOMIYA:  ( ) - MIMI 004 - £12
Utsunomiya some will recall was the genius behind the sound of After Dinner. Here, working with singer and accordionist JON, he has produced a CD that is more or less indescribable. It is a work of pure sound (and comes with a long and thoughtful essay about sound, place and performance. Do not expect 'weird' sounds and conventional complexity, nor electronics.. this is superficially baffling but essentially and existentially a genuine innovation. You can't listen to it for 'the music', it is a complete event, and there are listening recommendations which it pays to follow. Japanese release. limited quantity.

JONSSON, LACH'N:  Songs from the Cities of Decay - BAR 9602 - £12
Welcome reissue, with new intermezzo track, of the dark but fascinating LP featuring Lars on everything! Great drums and arrangements, accomplished use of odd metres and cross genre vocabularies (rock, medieval music, industrial noise) and strong composition. Nice to have it back.

JORGENS, P.O:  The Technology of Touch - NWM 008 - £12
A record it's hard to describe and do justice to. Consisting essentially of all manner of percussion carefully arranged and orchestrated, displaying a fine ear for detail and a sure sense of rhythm and dramaturgy. Each piece explores a clear set of sonorities and developmental possibilities with considerable imagination and variety. It's not contemporary, ethnic, minimal, repetitive, indulgent, jazzy ... but I can't say what it is.

JULVERNE:  Le Retour - IGL 089 - £12
Cult Belgian chamber rock/jazz/tango/ progressive group. Some very interesting arrangements. Part is a reissue of their most famous LP.

JUSTINE:  Suite - AM 016CD - £12
The core of 'Wondeurbrass' & 'Les Poules', here Joane Hetu, Diane Labrosse, Danielle Roger are joined by Marie Trudeau and guests Tenko & Zeena Parkins on 2 tracks. Continuing their work, their way. Excellent.

JUSTINE:  Langages Fantas.. - AM 033CD - £12
Right on course with another excellent CD. Justine assemble their pieces from unlikely material but with a fine ear for exactly the perfect sounds and structural movements. You can feel the people behind the playing and the raw edges here are vital links between listener and performer; unlike many 'experimental' groups, who seem to be afraid to take emotional responsibility for their work, Justine finds its centre and its strength precisely here.

KAISER, HENRY:  Lemon Fish Tweezer - RUNE 45 - £11.50
Lemon is an earlier compilation for Rune.

KAISER, HENRY:  The five Heavenly Truths - FOT HK1 - £12

KAISER/O'ROURKE/KIMURA:  Tomorrow Knows - VICTO CD 014 - £12

KALAHARI SURFERS:  In The Heart of the Beast (vinyl) - RR C24 - £8.30
Newscasts. Troublemaker Warric Sony, master of documentary incorporation & edit, who steals the sounds, embarassing speeches and paranoias from paradise and winds them into music that is insistent, out of hand, danceable, tricky and hallucinatory by turns.

KAMIYAMA, HOPPY:  Juice and Tremolo - Son 02 - £11
'Works of Chamber Music'. The remarkable Hoppy Kamiyama extends his composing side with a fine selection of pieces for String Quartet, String Quartet with Harp, Drums and Metal, Bass, Keyboards, Guitar and Drums, Solo Piano, for 4 TV commercials with a lot of instrumentation and some Space Insects. This is an excellent collection, full of ideas and good playing that stretches from almost traditional string writing to full ahead power noise, with interesting mixtures along the way.

KAMPEC DOLORES
Solid, clear and inventive songs. One of the most distinctive and original voices in Hungarian experimental/rock today. Some very radical guitar, arrangements on the edge and fine deployment of violin, effects, national music references and straight/tricky times.(Levitation is a reissue on CD of our 'POINTS EAST' LP).
See also ReR, Kontroll Csoport.

KAMPEC DOLORES:  Eye of the Needle - CDB 004 - £12

KAMPEC DOLORES:  Levitation - BAMU CD 001 - £11.50

KARET, DJAN:  The Devouring - RUNE 99 - £11.50

KARL EIN KARL:  Karl ein Karl - UTR 4039 CD - £12
Interesting and well recorded CD of played organised and improvised pieces, very listenable, varied and engaging. Bass, Voice, electronics, electric & acoustic guitar, cello mainly. Intelligent and well designed booklet and careful listening proposals (special order replay programmes for 'concert, dinner music, instructive statements, exclusive songs'.

KATO HIDEKI:  Turbulent Zone - ME 89801 - £12
A CD of Electric Bass solos? Yes. A multiplicity of techniques imaginatively deployed to produce a sequence of fragile sound events. Delicate noise.

KATZER, G/ Z. KRAUZE, J.KRCEK:  Aide Memoire/Folk Music (vinyl) - RR 22 - £7
'Aide Memoire'('Seven Nightmares From The Thousand Year Night') is a classic work. Commissioned by GDR Radio on the 30th Anniversary of Hitler's rise to power (to counter the nostalgia coming from West German TV and Radio at the time) it uses the treated voices of the old nazi leaders and other contemporary documentary materials in the construction of a musical and dramatic structure of hair-raising intensity. This is a major work, and unequivocally a political one. It comes with full English text and notes. 'Folk Music' is Breughelian chaos of decentred folk musics, about 100 melodies simultaneously played by autonomously organised sub- groups within the Polish Radio and TV Symphony Orchestra at the Warsaw Autumn 1972. 'Sonaty' is a concrete work based on a phonetic medieval text of nightingale songs. Two voices provide the source material, radically processed. Exquisite, clear and haunting. 16pp Book.

KEIJI HEINO:  Fushitsusha - VICTO CD 060 - £12
With Yasushi Ozawa (bass) and Ikuro Takahashi (drums).

KENSO:  Sora Ni Hikaru - BA 9465 - £15.50
1981,2 - 'one of the most important technical sympho bands'

KING/MOSS/YOSHIHIDE:  All At Once At Anytime - VICTO CD 029 - £12
Guitar, Turntables, Drums and Voice. In the hands of old hands. Live improvisations, well recorded and kept to the point.

KINOTHEK PERCUSSION:  Industry - NML D873CD - £12
Dedicated to RUSSOLO. Organised samples of factory and mechanical sounds.

KIXX:  Weisser Voodoo - UTR 4058 CD - £12
Dietmar Diesner, Lars Rudolph, David Gattiker and the ubiquitous Jim Meneses. An unusual collection of pieces featuring rhythm, noise, treated saxophones and voices, trumpet, guitar and unrecognisable cello + electronics. Homogeneous, sometimes inspired. Horrible cover art.

KJELL SAMKOPF:  Har Du Sunget Den For Grieg? - dBUT 010 - £12
Did you sing this for a Grieg? subtitled 'a landscape portrait of the artist 86 years on'. A highly interesting environ/plunder project contrasting minute 'empty' listening (to snow, mountain walks, ancient voices) with simultanious 'tidal' auditions of Grieg's lyric, orchestra, vocal and piano musics. One of a kind.

KLANGBRUCKE BERN:  Selected Soundscape No 1 - CD 305 - £12
Unusual document of a concert spaced out across a city. Many great parts and altogether a pretty interesting achievement. Beautifully produced and annotated.

KLAXON GUELE:  Bavards (dbl) - AM052 CD - £24

KLIMPEREI:  Toute seul sur la plage - AYAA CDT 059 - £12.50

KLUCEVSEK, GUY:  Scenes From a Mirage - RERE106CDM - £12
The excellent LP re-released on CD. Inventive collection of accordion pieces, mostly in rythmn and melody mood (for dance) and some for dense multiple accordion complexity. Extremely listenable

KOMBINAT M:  Hybrid Beat - RUNE 48 - £11.50

KONTROLL CSOPORT:  1983 (Dbl) - BVD 002-3 - £20
The legendary Hungarian song group. Strange pop, related to Kampec Dolores (share composer/guitarist Csaba Hajnoczy) with bizarre edge and great singing. Document of the unavailable (or at least 'underground') music of the early '80's. Well recorded.

KOPCE/OSKLID:  Jest Po·d... - PANTON 81115 - £12
Some will remember the excellent 7-inch, then the only recording of this interesting group. Now a well made CD. Fast, complex songs with imaginative arrangements and many soul/pop references, but all in a unique (but typically czech) style. Part of a truly original post- 'progressive' Czech school that deserves attention.

KOVAC, BORIS:  The Mask - TARCD004 - £11.50
Ensemble Music for Theatre. Covers a lot of ground. Scarce Jugoslavian pressing.

KRALDJURSASTALTEN:  Kraldjursastalten - MEGA 020 - £12
The legendary swedish reptile asylums, comprising telepathic twins Stefan and Thomas Agaton (Guitar, Bass) with the prodigious Michael Maksymenko (Drums). Nobody has yet got closer to the lurching swing complexity of the old magic band, I mean thinking like not imitating.

KRAUSE, DAGMAR:  Tank Battles - VP138 - £12.50
Dagmar's classic 'Songs of Hanns Eisler' CD. 36 great tracks beautifully arranged and recorded, terrifyingly sung and straight to the point. Classic.

KRAUSE, DAGMAR & GOYETTE, MARIE:  A scientific dream and a French kiss - RES 139 CD - £12
A collection of songs. Dagmar sings, Marie provides the big-bands, orchestras, other sound samples and incidental commentary with a particularly audacious simplicity that conceals a radical conception.

KRZISNIK, BORUT:  Stories from Magatrea - BK1 - £12
An extraordinary and almost extinct recording. Treated Orchestra. Enormous sound, rock spirit.

KULENTY, MACCI, VAN DIJK, CUTLER etc:  Going Up - KLIM OP 007 - £12.50

KURYOKHIN, SERGEI:  Divine Madness (4 cds) - CD LR 813-816 - £49.24

L'ENSEMBLE PIERRE CARTIER:  Les Fleurs du Tapis - AM 043CD - £12

L'ENSEMBLE RAYE:  Hiver/Pinson - AYAA CDT 028 - £12.50
A collection of exquisite constructions pellucidly recorded, preserving with crystal clarity the mostly acoustic (often exotic) instruments played. Much attention to unexpected detail, eccentric arrangements, melody, expression. A quiet record, mildly reminiscent of Lars Hollmer.

L'ENSEMBLE RAYE:  En Frac - LUS 003 - £12.75
A new CD by Ray - always a welcome event. A collection of beautifully arranged and played pieces, unfashionably tuneful and Hollmer/hot club - for guitar, bass, all manner of brass and accordion - joined here by the remarkable Shirley Anne Hoffman. Intelligent and generous music and a pleasure to listen to.

L'ENSEMBLE RAYE:  Quelques Pieces Detachees - AYAAVDT 0993 - £12.50
Return of the great melody band with a new collection of fine pieces.

L'ORCHESTRE DES PAS PERDUS:  T'auras pas ta - AM 040CD - £12

L'ORCHESTRE PAS PERDUS:  Maison douce maison - AM 060 - £12
Bigband pieces, very charming, bordering on exotica.

L.VOAG:  The Way Out - ALLV CD - £11.50
Reissue of the genuinely strange and idiosyncratic masterpiece reclusive and light-sensitive LV. In the guise of VERY OPEN and stretched pop songs, experiments stream out at A LOT per minute. A melange of snappy tunes, highly unobvious arrangements, left handed humour, sound research, super radical mixing and one off words and singing style. With extra material including the legendary and wholly perfect Beauty Spreads 7-inch. In my view, this is a benchmark best of the late 70's Magnum Opus.

LA 1919:  Giorni Felici - MASO 90094 - £12
Guests on single tracks: Franco Fabbri, Henry Kaiser, John Oswald, Fausto Rossi.

La 1919:  Jouer. Spielen. To Play - MASOCD90063 - £12

LA LEGENDE DE LA PLUIE:  Hetu, Parkins, Tenko etc - AM 026CD - £12
Written, Improvised, Studio work. A unique production of fascinating quality - prepared for and presented at the Montreal Musiques Actuelles Festival 1990. A travelogue, displaced narrative, collision..? Sublime moments and plenty of musical lateral thinking. Nice package.

LA PEAUDE DU MONDE:  ditto - FAI040CD - £12

LABORATORIO DI MUSICA & IMAGINE:  Colpi Secci - ERH 008 - £12
Another collection of compositions for films by the italian 14 piece mini-orchestra

LABROSSE, DIANE:  Face cachee des - AM 036CD - £12
'The hiden side of things'. Diane, of JUSTINE, at work with concrete sounds (diverse, everyday in the main, and annotated in the booklet), radical treatments and voice. From which: stories and music and great mirages, finely wrought and far from raw noise. Beautifully presented.

LABROSSE, DIANE /COTE M:  Duo - AM 031CD - £12
Is Diane Labrosse and Michel Cote, main instruments keyboard and drums/percs added by electronics, tape, stuff. Fragments, Constructions, Episodes.

LABROSSE/MORI/TETREAULT:  Ile Bizzare - AM 055 CD - £12
Takes no prisoners. Radical electronics, employing no recognisable sound, but full of silence and definition. An impressive piece of electronic music, except that you know it was actually played in real time. Extreme and beautifully controlled dynamics.

LACRYMOSA:  Joy of the Wrecked Ship - SSE 4033 - £15.50

LACRYMOSA:  Bugbear - SSE 8021 - £15.50
Previously released LP and EP and 5 extra tracks. Spacious and organic with additive rythmns, tunes and half deconstructed arrangments. Chamber sonorities. Strange.

LAIBACH:  Kast Pod Baptism - SUBCD 001-9 - £12.55

LANE, FRED:  From the One that Cut You - SDE 8911CD - £11
The inimitable and extraordinary Rev. Lane and his huge 20 piece orchestra manned and womanned by an extraordinary galaxy of famous pseudonyms rips his way through 2 classic LP's. Frank Sinatra on a cocktail of psychotropics and psychedelics. Funny and frightening and completely unique. Who could produce or even conceive such a project today? Deleted - so these are the last copies.

LAS HALMAS:  Plus One - IH 9601 - £11.50

LASWELL, BILL/NICHOLAS BULLEN:  Bass Terror - SR 82 - £12.55

LEMONS, CHRIS:  Fantasy & Icon - CL2 - £12
A completely extraordinary production. This is a 38 minute piece for Electric Guitar, Bass, Kit and Udo Drums, Synthesiser, some ethnic instruments and Symphony Orchestra. And it's not Deep Purple but a fascinating and skilfully through composed piece after Lutoslawski - though far more liberal with instrumentation and genre references - where the electric instruments are fully and properly integrated. More amazing is that CL managed to arrange and finance an orchestra (the Lithuanian State Orchestra) to perform and record it. It was then substantially reworked and re-mastered it back in the USA. A remarkable achievement and I'm sure an early glimpse into a career that could produce great things.

LEMONS, CHRIS:  Control/Refugee - CL1 - £12
'Nirvana meets Lutoslavski' with String Orchestra of of Lyric Opera, Chicago and Rock instruments. Heavily composed and well integrated. OPTION compares to Rhys Chatham, Zappa, Chronos etc.

LILITH:  Redwing - SR 96 - £12.55

LILITH:  Stone - SR 55 - £12.55

LINGHAM:  Musiche per un Film Immaginario - BY TITLE - £11
First CD by this intriguing Italian group. Influences from early Art Bears, Magma, Fred Frith, well worth checking out.

LINZ, RAINER/BRIGID BURKE:  Intersect - CD NMA 7906 - £12.50

LOOK DE BOEK:  Bec et Ongles - AYAA TIC 089 - £12.50
Another one-of-a-kind. Simple but essential. Short pieces - played but made of minimal elements carefully deployed. Unsophisticated but full of ideas. Fresh, charming and with occasional echoes of Racaille and Musci/Venosta. A modest but excellent and stimulating piece of work.

LOUISE AVENUE:  Let's take one more.. - C7 007 - £12.55
As only Belgian groups seem to manage: another rythmic but dense small-ensemble not-jazz, not- rock, not-classical chamber music group with controlled compositions in the vein: Juleverne, Cro-Magnon &c.

LUNDING, RASMUS:  A travellers guide - PINGO CD 006 - £12
Interesting and well produced experiment. Memoir of a journey with richly compiled field recordings, studio performance, composition and arrangement; sometimes rather too much easy-listening to my taste, but a notable experiment.

LUSSIER, RENE:  Tresor de la Langue - AM 015CD - £12
A work of extraordinary accomplishment and vision. Years in the making (all feature transcripts, instrumentations and orchestrations of the human voice), sometimes breathtaking in its effect and technique. Won the French language radio Prize, not surprisingly.

LUSSIER, RENE:  Fin de Travail - AM 000CD - £12
Reissue on CD of the classic vinyl release. Great Work !

LUSSIER, RENE:  Trois Histoires - AM 041CD - £12
Three classic pieces out of the 'Tresor' mould - where speech and music and treated sound and performances tell a complex but gripping story. This is radio art, but beyond radio art, mapping new ground cleared by the extraordinary 'Tresor' - one of the masterworks of recording. And sings the songs of the unsung, of craftsmen, ingenues and immigrants. Great work.

LUSSIER, RENE:  Le Corps De L'Ouvrage - AM 029CD - £12
New CD of composed pieces, small big band sound and beautifully recorded. Daxophone featured as well as Rene's (far from) usual radical and great guitar playing. Something new in the field: Rene as the Rock Gil Evans?

LUSSIER, RENE:  Chronique d'un Genocide Annonce - AM 058 CD - £12
Film music for a documentary about Rwanda. Dark, atmospheric music, scored for guitars, clarinet family, flute family, trombone, viola, violin, cello, percussion.

Radical sound improvisations.

LUSSIER, RENE, PIERRE TANGUAY:  Le Vie Qui Bat - AM 047CD - £12
Improvisations for acoustic guitar and drums - but with the care and perfection now expected from Rene. Close, intimate sound, and constantly to-the-point playing from both parties, make this a gripping and exquisite recording. Minimum means, maximum expression.

LUSSIER, RENE/ROBERT LEPAGE:  Chants et Dnaces du Monde Inanime - AM 001 CD - £12
Reissue of the Vinyl LP.

LUSSIER, RENE/JEAN DEROME:  Le Royaume du Silencieux - AM 018CD - £12
Beautifully recorded, surprising, inventive. running from written and complex to simple and mysterious, with much tapework and virtuosic playing. Half understood stories of sound. Prodigious.

M'AABET, MOHAMMED:  The Storyteller..Fisherman - SUBCD 0015-38 - £12.55

M. GIRA:  Drainland - SR 86 - £12.55

MACHINE FOR MAKING SENSE:  Talk is cheap - SPLIT 4 - £12
A long standing and fascinating improvising group with a unique earprint - 2 seconds of listening and you know who it is. The machine is Stevie Wishart (Hurdy Gurdy), Jin Denley (winds), Amanda Stewart and Chris Mann (texts/voices) and Rick Rue (tape manipulations). The use of voices is particularly unusual - a far from anything you might expect. Interesting.

MAESTRO TRYTONY:  Enoptronia - MOZG CD02 - £12

MAGICAL POWER MAKO:  Magical power - BA 9331 - £15.50

MAGICAL POWER MAKO:  Music from Heaven - BA 9460 - £15.50

MAGICAL POWER MAKO:  Bluedot - BELL 95131 - £15.50

MAGMA

MAGMA were one of the most extraordinary groups I ever saw. It was the compositional, philosophical and inspirational project of Christian Vander who brought (compositionally and essentially) Carl Orff, Stravinsky, East European Folk melodies and John Coltrane together in a form and intensity comparable to nothing else in Rock. He also seemed to play only with virtuoso instrumentalists who focus all their skill inward, toward a transcendent simplicity, notwithstanding the complexity and difficulty of the materials. These are long pieces (25-50 minutes) of dense structure but long unfolding and sometimes hair- raising intensity. Magma always delivers what it promises. Here also are exquisitely haunting melodies, beautifully sung. Magma is the one group to whose work I constantly relisten, and who continue to astonish and engage me. The best is inexhaustible - not to mention Vander's preternaturally extraordinary drumming, Klaus Blasquiz's perfect voice and remarkable range, three virtuosic bass players, and some infinitely tiny perfections of expression and microtonal movement from Claude Olmos (Guitar on 'Mekanik') and Dider Lockwood (Violin on 'Live'). I must aknowledge that this is my own opinion. I know people who are less enthusiastic. But I can think of no other group who innovated in such a complete way, and successfully realised their project (not a monster hybrid but a genuinely new form, born from elements of Folk, Classical, Jazz and Rock - not quoting or collaging, but fully unified) and were technical (but unassumingly disciplined) instrumental virtuosi. Try something - to see if you like it at all - I recommend for instance: TRISTAN, MEKANIK (both, they're different), MAGMA LIVE, KONTAKOSZ, RETROSPKTIW 1-2 and 3 and 1001C.

MAGMA:  1001 Centigrades - REX 6 - £12.55
Recommended, see above.

MAGMA:  Mekanik Destruktiw - REX 7 - £12.55
Recommended, see above.

MAGMA:  Mekanik Komandoh - REX 62 - £12.55
Recommended, see above.

MAGMA:  Kohntarkosz - REX 8 - £12.55
Recommended, see above.

MAGMA:  Tristan and Isolde - REX 9 - £12.55
Recommended, see above.

MAGMA:  Retrospektiw 111 - REX 15 - £12.55
Recordings from the legendary OLYMPIA concerts in June 1980. 'Retrovision' is one of the best recordings of the Magma breakneck orgasmic post soul style, and a classic. Followed by a full length version of HHAI and the 4 min. 'LA' DAWOTSIN. Don't be surprised - it's only 36 minutes long.

MAGMA:  Magma Live (dbl) - REX 10 - £20
Recommended.

MAGMA:  Bobino Concert 1981 (dbl) - AKT 5 - £20
A live concert performance, studio quality recording. This is the post-classic Magma, for me, with more pyrotechnics and jazz-funk, and less Stravinsky and Coltrane-lyricism than the earlier works. There are still stunning moments and some quintessential Vander stretches that Magma afficianados will treasure. As well as a lot of otherwise unavailable pieces.

MAGMA:  Theatre du Taur 1975.Dbl - AKT 4 - £20
Double CD of beautifully recorded and played versions of Kontarkosz, Hhai, Kobaaia and Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh. About 94 minutes. Prodigious. Plus.

MAGMA:  Concert, Bruxelles 1971 (double cd) - AKT 8 - £20
The 1001 Centigrades group with an extraordinary programme where even the Softmachine and Chicago roots show through now and then. For the time this is an extraordinarily important document of the extent of experiment and adventure possible - and tested - in rock. And for fans of Magma it's indispensible as a lens on their development and influences. Also, here is the first public performance of a proto-version of Mekanik, very different. Altogether welcome.

MAGMA:  Concert 1976 - Opera De Reims (triple CD) - AKT 9 - £18
Same band as Magma Live (except 2nd piano now Patrick Gauthier). CD 1 contains an ok version of J.Top's 'De Futura' for the first time (I wonder what happened to mass band version from Nancy a year earlier) and an improvisation followed by a drum solo. CD 2 has further versions of Kontarkosz and Theusz Hamtaahk (I think you'll continue to listen to the ones on Live and Retrospektiw I, II) which were previously released {bootlegged?} on 'Kiss 11' and CD 3 has yet another Mekanik (the 7Tth ?) and again, it's different and excellent - and clear, especially Vander's part: a study version (+long noisy solo). Special mention for the prodigious Bernard Paganotti.

MAGMA:  Offering, A Fiieh - REX A9 - £12.55
Offering is the more extended, coltrane influenced post magma group.

MAGMA:  Offering 1 & 2 - REX A1/A11 - £12.55
New works. More extended; more of the Coltrane and less of the Orff/Rock. Featuring especially Christian and Stella's singing.

MAGMA:  Offering 2 & 3 - REX A6 - £12.55
MAGMA:  Retrospectiw 1-2 Dbl - REX 16 - £20
Also from the legendary Paris Olympia concerts 9, 10, 11 June 1980 with Paganotti (bass), Widemann and Gauthier (pianos) Didier Lockwood (violin) and 5 singers, plus Vander himself. CD one is a radically different THEUSZ HAMATAAHK first movement, streetching the composition far from its familiar interpretation. In my opinion this is a classic piece of work. CD 2 is another MEKANIK. For friends of Magma this is an important document.

MAGMA:  Kobaia (dbl) - REX 4 - £20

MAGMA:  Attahk - REX 13 - £12.55

MAGMA:  Udu Wudu - REX 12 - £12.55

MAGMA:  Inedits - REX 19 - £12.55

MAGMA:  Mythes et Legendes - REX 14 - £12.55
(a kind of Sampler with extracts linked with talking, telling the 'story' of Kobaia, but not the best introduction in my view)

MAGMA:  Les Voix de Magma - AKT 1 - £12.55

MAGMA:  Merci - REX 3 - £12.55

MAGMA:  Kompila - REX 20 - £5.50
Sampler

MANDRAKE:  Unreleased Materials - BELLE 9743 - £15.50

MARANHA, ANDRE:  Gargula - CR 004 - £12
Andre, of Osso Exotico, with a beautifully presented CD made from Bottle, Glass, Voice, Bowed Cymbal and Recorder, recorded in bathroom and corridor. Consistent and very consequent. For all friends of the monimal.

MARANHA, DAVID:  Musica 2 - CR 005 - £12
Also beautifully wrapped. Curious minimal pieces for unusual instruments.

MARCOEUR, ALBERT:  Ma Vie avec Elles. - CD 920 - £12
1990. After a 7 year wait, a new CD from AM. As usual the construction and arrangements are exemplary, not to say extraordinary, with an open border on the bizarre. Old AM elements of messed about minimalism or systems music are further developed to the point where complexity and simplicity fuse.

MARCOEUR, ALBERT:  Sports et percussions - CC861 - £12
Just out summer 1994. Albert and his brothers and others take on Sports. Intricate algorythms, musically clothed, based on le sport. Gerard de Nerval used to walk in the park with a lobster on a leash. C'est comme ca. Unique work, great packaging.

MARGIORANI, LUCIANO/ROBERTO ZANESI:  Vendetta ! - BOZO CD 9801 - £12

MARTIN ARCHER and SIMON FELL:  Pure Water Construction - DISCUS CD - £12
With the above and Gino Robair, Robin Hayward, Rhodri Davis, Jenni Molloy, Stefan Jaworzyn, Charlie Collins, Chris Burn. An very interesting idea - a piece assembled from individual recordings of the above, but as a compositional exercise by way of computer editing and processing.

MASAOKA ORCHESTRA:  What is the difference between stripping and playing the violin ?[ - VICTO CD 058 - £12

MASQUE:  Third Ear - Third Eye - BELLE 97384 - £15.50

MASSACRE:  Killing Time - RECDEC 906 - £12.50
Reissue of the Heavy Guitar Rock 'n' Row album released in Japan in 1981 by Fred Frith, Bill Laswell and Fred Maher. Power trio.

MATHEWS. KAFFE:  CD ANN - AWCD 0001 - £11.50
Violin and processing, layers, drones, loops, slow developments.

MAX NAGL:  Daily Bullet - LEO LAB CD023 - £11.50

MEKONG ZOO:  Minimal Dance - WMCD012 - £11
World music meets Carl Orff's childrens songs with an echo of Jean Luc Ponty, featuring the vocals of Japanese singer Mieko Shimiza, and the exquisite electronic violin of Aska Kaneko. Not in the usual ReR style, but.... .

MELTABLE SNAPS IT:  Points Blank - NML 8604CD - £12

MENGELBERG, MISHA:  Misha Mengelberg - AI 010 - £11
New from Angelica and recorded live at the festival in 1996. A long piano solo, which you may like or not, some excellent pieces for orchestra, slipping from baroque to contemporary to classical bar to bar. Zorn for Orchestra, very well scored and performed, and another, I think fine, solo piano piece. Worth it for the orchestra pieces alone I think

MERTENS, ERIC:  Spleen - C7012 - £12.55

MIDAS:  Midas 2 - BELLE 96299 - £15.50

MILESI, PIERO:  Modi - RUNE 63 - £11.50

MILESI, PIERO:  Nuclear Observatory - RUNE 7 - £11.50

MILLER, PHIL:  Digging In - RUNE 34 - £11.50

MILLER, PHIL:  Cutting Both Ways - RUNE 11 - £11.50

MINCHEV, GEORGI:  Concerto for Piano & Orchestra - GEORGI MINCHEV - £11
This occupies one side of an LP from the 3rd International Music Festival, Leningrad, 1988. It is an impressive and adventurous piece, well constructed and very well played - with some extraordinary and unexpected effects, beautifully employed; for instance the sudden entry of electronic treatments on the piano, or the fast-running hi-hat part taken from another genre altogether..Highly Recommended. The other side contains a servicable concerto for viola and orchestra by Andrei Eshpai. Order By Name

MINTON, PHIL QUARTET:  Mouthful of Ecstacy - VICTO CD 041 - £12

MIRIODOR:  3rd Warning - RUNE 32 - £11.50
Rich, round, tuneful. Belongs to what was once called 'progressive' music genre. Now one of a kind. Unusual packaging.

MIRIODOR:  Miriodor - RUNE 14 - £11.50
Re-release of the 2nd LP + 30 extra minutes.

MIRIODOR:  Elastic Juggling - RUNE 78 - £11.50

MIRIODOR:  Rencontres - RUNE 108 - £11.50

MITCHELL, ROSCOE:  Songs in the Wind - VICTO CD 011 - £12

MOLECULES, THE:  Down Under the Black Light - MEGA 007 - £11
Speed Metal/Punk/Cut-up vignettes - tight, shocking arrangements, the kind of band that takes no prisoners. We originally took these for distribution only. Not for the squeamish.

MOMES, THE:  Spiralling - RIFT15 - £11
Mick Hobbs, Tim Hodgkinson, Andy Channing. The LP with 2 extra tracks.

MOORE, STEVE:  Return of the Poet (cassette) - IEM 611 - £7
Electronic/Electroacoustic/ Concrete works using a great deal of documentary sound, organised in an extraordinary way. Many will already know Steve's work from our Quarterly and from his classic LP: A Quiet Gathering. Cassette. Own Label.

MOORE, THURSTON:  Piece for Jetsun Dolma - VICTOCD 045 - £12
Two 30 minute live improvisations for Electric Guitar and two Drummer-percussionists (with audience enthusiasm). Noise and avoidance of metric beat - with quiet parts for amplifier hum and small sounds. Interesting, but for me too close and too far from, for instance, Sonny Sharrock. Worth a listen, just avoid the sleevenotes.

MOOREFIELD, VIRGIL:  Distractions on the way.. - RUNE 56 - £11.50

MORPHOGENESIS:  Charivari Music - PD 902 - £11.50
Only the second recording of this venerable durable British electroacoustic ensemble, who make non synthesised drone-with-event music where the quality of the SOUND is crucial and precisely organic; a unique voice here well represented.

MORPHOGENESIS:  Solarisation - STREAMLINE 1006 - £12
5 long pieces of live electroacoustics in the grand tradition of MEV, AMM; which is to say, skilled deployment of highly sophisticated sound-material, manipulated in real time and with a true concrete base - no samples and sequencers here - that draws the ear into a deep, hallucinatory well of sound. Continuous modulation is the rule, contemplative and dark; a single mood, but explored with masterful accomplishment..

MORPHOGENESIS:  Stromatolites - VER 1 - £12

MORROCAN TRANCE 2:  Sufi - SR 97 - £12.55

MOSAIC:  Yiddish & Judeo-Spanish - SR 54 - £12.55

MOSS/OTTO/SCHULTE:  The day we forgot - NML 9118CD - £12

MOTHER MALLARD'S PORTABLE MASTERPIECE CO.:  1970-73 - RUNE 109 - £11.50

MOTOR TOTEMIST GUILD:  Archive 1 - NML/MTG1 - £12
Collection from 81-86 consisting of the scarce 'Infra dig' and 'Contact with Veils' (here remixed and much altered) from the chamber rock ensemble whose complexity, twists, turns and general unpredictability can be impressive. The very early material is particularly interesting in its musical scope, concise organisation of material and theoretical density (not to say wit). Ambitious, not always successful, but a timely and welcome reissue.

MOTOR TOTEMIST GUILD:  Archive 2 - NML/MTG2 - £12
Contains material from Shapuno Zoo, A Luigi Futi and Klang. Admittedly an acquired taste this post-Henry Cow complexity chamber-rock, but with moments of glory and concentrated musicality. A phenomenon.

MOTOR TOTEMIST GUILD:  City Of Mirrors - RUNE 116 - £11.50

MUFFINS, THE
They won't thank me for saying it, but the Muffins are the quintessential example of a group whose excellence, clear musical intelligence, light touch and broad range marked them out clearly for success and a place in the history of 'progressive' rock, and yet they were overlooked and more or less vanished without trace. This collection (their best available) gives us another chance to enjoy a group who will surely appeal to anyone who liked Henry Cow, Hatfield, early Zappa et al. Start with Chronometers (below). MUFFINS, THE:  Open City - CUNEIFORM 55007 - £11.50 See above

MUFFINS, THE:  Chronometers - CUNEIFORM 550010 - £11.50
See above

MUFFINS, THE:  185 - CUNEIFORM 55013 - £11.50
Reissue of the Muffins most ambitious (and most patchy, I think, but with great sections) LP. [Memo: The Muffins as America's most impressive and innovative Cow/Hatfield style group, here joined on some tracks by Fred Frith, who also produced the original LP]. Most interesting is that the CD (because LP-CD = lots of extra time) also contains a contemporary remix from the original masters of the raw live performances without post production and treatments. A unique opportunity to compare and contemplate the same material 'raw' and 'cooked'...a very nice idea.

MUFFINS, THE:  Manna/Mirage - WMAS 4 - £11.50
See above

MUJICIAN:  Poem about the Hero - RUNE 62 - £11.50
Mujician is a new Keith Tippet group.

MUJICIAN:  Birdman - RUNE 82 - £11.50

MUJICIAN:  Colours Fulfilled - RUNE 102 - £11.50
Keith Tippet with Paul Dunmall, Tony Levin and Paul Rogers. Jazz Quartet with great first track, well turned performances.

MUJICIAN:  The Journey - RUNE 42 - £11.50

MURASHKIN, B:  Bio Energetic Music - MURASHKIN, B - £12
More or less indescribable soundworks (mainly for film) for exotic and electric instruments, concrete sound, various priests reading and singing now and then and Ali Khan (sitar) off a record. Extremely limited. ORDER BY TITLE.

MURRAY/HOPKINS:  Firestorm - VICTO CD 020 - £12

MUSCI, ROBERTO:  Debris of a Loa - LOW 009 - £12
Reissue of the long unavailable LP 'The Loa of Music', made before he teamed up with Giovanni Venosta, plus 6 new tracks.

MUSCI/VENOSTA/MARIANI:  Losing the Orthodox Path - VICTO CD 049 - £12
M/V, with electronic composer Mariani, extending their method to medieval and religious musics, transformed, layered, composed upon. See also, ReR .

NA MARGAN:  Death's Angel - BAR 9302 - £7.24
Another 12cm CD-EP from Bauta. 2 solid songs, well produced and very well performed. Limited, numbered edition.

NATIONAL HEALTH:  Missing Pieces - VP113CD - £12.50
A collection of unreleased pieces, some of which I think are amongst the best things this group has done, including a classic 'Canterbury' song by Dave Stewart and a couple of very Eggish pieces by Mont Campbell.

NATIONAL HEALTH:  Complete Works Dbl - ESD 80402/41 - £23

NAZARIO, LELO:  Discurso aos Objetos (vinyl) - UT 17 532 - £11
This is an extremely rare out-of-print Brasilian 12-inch EP of excellent Electronic/Concrete compositions, in a high quality pressing and art-printed cover. VERY limited supply.

NE ZDHALI:  Whatever Happens, Twist! - RECDEC 65 - £12.50

NE ZHDALI:  Live Rarities Vol 1 - NML 9722 - £12
AT LAST a recording that captures some of what makes Ne Zhdali such a great concert group. To my mind, far better than all but the first studio record. Inventive kind-of rock with brains, exuberance and fast footwork.

NE ZHDALI:  Hey Driver, Cool Down the Horses - RECDEC 65 - £12.50

NECKS, THE:  Aquatic - FOM 0002 - £12
Australian minimalist so-called ambient jazz ? I guess that's a stab at it. Simple idea easy to think of but hard to do. Long tracks of acceptable steady low key grooves with slow micro developments. Aquatic is maybe the bravest - just one long track. An acquired taste but nobody else is quite on this case.... Features the ubiquitous Tony Buck (drums) with Lloyd Swanton (Acoustic and Electric Bass), Chris Abrahams (Piano, Keyboards). Heroes of 'Mixing It'.

NEGATIVLAND:  Points - SEELAND 002 - £12.50
See above

NEGATIVLAND:  Escape From Noise - RECDEC 17 - £12.50
Not quite Music or Documentary, or Theatre, or Raw Sound. Immense care and hair-raising detail in the cuts, juxtapositions, layers, interruptions. A phenomenon uniquely American and unique to tape.

NEGATIVLAND:  A Big 10-8 Place - SEELAND 003 - £12.50
See 'Escape' above

NEGATIVLAND:  Helter Stupid - RECDEC 29 - £12.50

More

NEGATIVLAND:  Over the Edge Vol 5. - SEELAND 010 - £12.50
From an impressive series of radio broadcasts by Crosley Bendix, cultural critic, halfwit, satirist, purveyor of breathtaking extended mixed metaphors, purple (almost black) prose and deep thoughts on Modern arts, media and so forth. Talk, talk, talk but razor sharp. Probably not for repeated listening.

NEU KONSERVATIV:  Various Artists - DSA 54046 - £12
A God Mountain sampler produced by the legendary Hoppy Kamiyama. A good introduction to a strong Japanese new music stream, featuring terrifying technique, hypnosis, screaming power and plenty of post rock imagination. Includes Altered States, Pon, Bass Army, Tipographica, Optical 8, Ground Zero and the God Mountain Orchestra.

NON CREDO:  Happy Wretched Family - VICTOCD 033 - £12

NORMA:  Psycho/Circus Music - CAICAI 002 - £11
A great CD. Deconstructivist, highly composed, brilliantly orchestrated and highly cut-up mini orchestra meets recording technology. Ensemble works, wide sonic resources. 5 major pieces: 'Suite from PSYCHO' developed from the Bernard Hermann film score, 'Chinoiserie'', the extraordinary 'Circus Music', dedicated to Nina Rota, 'N.O.R.M.A.' - a tape/cutup 'overture' to the disc lying in the middle - work of the recording engineer, 'Artes Moriendi' and 'Classico' (for turntables). There's a world of music here and it's a new world.

NUS:  All the Vertical Angles - SR 102 - £12.55

OPTICAL 8:  Bug - DSA 54048 - £12
Screaming. The legendary Hoppy Kamiyama and band rip up heavy strips of solid power and rodeo with them. The energy you find only in Japan, coupled with an eclectic and surefooted technique.

ORCHESTER 33 1/3:  Orchester 33 1/3 - PDN 006/RHIZ 000 - £12.50
Large ensemble project, covering and mixing all manner of musics in very contemporary way. Some Ground Zero lines, some almost techno, a lot of developmental arrangements, a little minimal, grooves, electronics - generally assembled with imagination and flair. Unique and extremely interesting. A success. Also one of the best and most original (and to-the-point) packages I've ever seen - so much so, it's worth the money for the package alone. Amazing.

ORCHESTRE MURPHY:  Frankincense - OUT 26 - £12
Another major hit from the OUT label who brought you Bing Selfish and the Ideals. Songs, eccentric if you like Napalm Death, but easy to glide around the ballroom floor to if, like me, you are absolutely normal. Highly individual production values, good texts and a great cover. An acquired taste maybe, but I would say one definitely worth acquiring.

ORCHESTRE MURPHY:  Bogtrotting - X0UT 28 - £12
Truly eccentric and absolutely out of step with any known fashion, past or present, though obliquely familiar to many of them, Rob mines banality for material and comes up with... hyper-banality gone wrong. I mean this in the nicest way. Played music. I like this stuff, but it's not obvious.

ORCHESTRE MURPHY:  Smut - ALOMCD - £11.50

ORGANUM:  Veil of Tears - MRCD 24 - £11.50
A very interesting sound/environment/ noise recording featuring Michel Prime, David Jackman, Dinah Jane Rowe plus Roger Sutherland and some remixing (before the recording was made, according to the sleeve!) by Jim O'Rourke. Nice work.

OSKLID:  Osklid - OSKLID - £11
7-inch EP in a series of new experimental Czech groups. Interesting. Incredibly rare now. Order By Name

OSSO EXOTICO:  1st CD - OE V1 - £12
For specialists. A curiosity from Portugal. 9 pieces pursuing unusual sound and odd structural arrangement. Half minimal, half beyond it. Unusual packaging. Very Limited.

OSSO EXOTICO:  2nd CD - ANANANA 11001 - £12
Another indescribable piece of work: formal but often beautifully paced...abstract, minimal - maybe sometimes a little too extended.

OSTERTAG, BOB:  Like a Melody - No Bitterness - MVOLR - 01 - £11.50
The Jackson Pollock sound. Fractal densities. From one of the pioneers and intelligences of sampling

OSTERTAG, BOB:  Verbatim - RED NOTE - £12
Third in Bob's great sampled-live-sampled project with Phil Minton and Mark Dresser. Nice packaging. See also special distribution

OSTERTAG, BOB:  Say No More - RECDEC 59 - £12.50
Bob takes recordings supplied him by Joey Baron, Phil Minton & Mark Dresser and builds two super-high adrenalin pieces, with an intensity I don't believe could be actually performed (we'll see, they plan to do just this and release it as Vol.2). Interesting process, sometimes extremely powerful; overall provokingly ambiguous: the signs are all very human but they've been made superhuman by technology.

OSTERTAG, BOB:  Sooner or Later - RECDEC 37 - £12.50

OSTERTAG, BOB:  Attention Span - RECDEC 33 - £12.50

OSTERTAG, BOB/OTOMO YOSHIHIDE:  Twins - CMDD 0-00030 - £12.50
Concept: 3 invitees prepare 3 original pieces of about 4 minutes. Bob and Otomo generate pieces from deconstructing, sampling, reconstructing, and sometimes supplementing them; each 'parent' thus leading to a set of 'twins'. The original pieces - by Chris Cutler, Yagi Michiyo and Herb Robertson - appear too, so here's a window on samplers, musical thinking and plunderphonia - as well as a very listenable CD. Japanese Pressing

OSTERTAG/FRITH/MINTON:  Voice of America - RECDEC 907 - £12.50
Stands the test of time

OSWALD, JOHN:  Plexure - AVAN 06 - £19.30
Short and intense threshold-of-recognition Plunderphonic assembly, beautifully crafted and an instant classic.

OSWALD, JOHN/GRATEFUL DEAD:  Greyfolded (dbl) - SA1969 - £19.30
John takes 25 years of GREATFUL DEAD concerts (100+ live performances) and from them creates (seamlessly) a platonic ideal version of 'Dark Star' one second short of an hour. No Plunderphonic pyrotechnics here but a dead-paced unfolding that imbricates times and places, staying pretty much freeform (with psychedelic climax) until 40 minutes in when there's a rock burst burst followed by a Phil Lesh feature and then echoes of old Mexico. For Grateful dead fans, close listeners and the curious.

OTOLITHEN:  S.O.D - RUNE 97 - £11.50

OTOMO YOSHIHIDE:  Vinyl Tranquilizer - NAIM 01 CD - £12
Otomo's MEMORY DISORDER, Solo works, Vol 2. Featuring 60 1 minute tracks each working on a single vinyl record..; a compendium of techniques and fun to 'spot the source'.
