DA CAPO:  Da Capo - EGM 001 - £12
Extracts from concerts at DA CAPO, including Bach, Debussy, Shoenberg, Lee Konitz, Koln Saxophone Mafia, Luis de Matteo, John Cage, Lauren Newton, Michael Svoboda and others. Interesting collection (because dependent on the concert series; no one would compile such a set otherwise) which makes a good listening programme. Strange packaging and notes on a pack of cards.

DADA:  Castle Wall - BELL 9481 - £15.50

DALLAPICOLA/BERIO:  Short Pieces From Italy - SR 58 - £12.55

DAMA DAMA:  Dama Dama - WORE 960003-2 - £12
DD are a percussion ensemble with a strange and interesting repertoire, drawn mostly from Czech composers of the last 40 years - and many from the last 6 years. Occasional appearance of non percussion instruments and rock/industrial/theatre aesthetics. A few very off-the-wall moments here. An interesting and unusual record.

DATA DIRECT:  La Dolce Vita - CD 044 - £12
SLOVENIA. One of the trio, Borut Krzisnik will be well known to you from our Points East release some years ago. Decidedly up to date, played and processed compositions: skidding off techno here and there - and other genres too, but varied, often great, ideas, well realised. A group (with guests). Excellent sound and packaging.

DATENRYU:  Unto - BELLE 97370 - £15.50

DEAN, ELTON:  Silent Knowledge - RUNE 85 - £11.50

DEAN, ELTON/TIPETT/ROGERS ETC:  Bladik - RUNE 92 - £11.50

DEANE, J.A.:  Nomad - VICTOCD 035 - £12

DEBILE MENTHOL:  Battre/Emile Au Jardin - RECDEC 601 - £15.50
The two LP's combined on one CD. The Debiles were wild, inventive, rhythmically complex and extremely eccentric. On the unruly end of the RIO aesthetic and with high grade players and composers. A welcome reissue.

DENIO, AMY:  Birthing Chair Blues - KFWCD-111 - £11.50
Amy solo with her best so far, playing guitar, bass, saxes like a demon and singing better than ever. Strong arrangements, exact and exiting use of musical sound, and beautiful, seductive recording. Lyrical, tough, mysterious in proportions not available elsewhere. Amy's is a unique voice, as player, singer and composer. Addictive repeated listening and highly recommended.
See also misc, ReR.

DENIO, AMY:  More Spoot I piu grandi successi (dbl) - MOMUS 006-007 - £16.60
Amy's greatest hits - a good selection. Culled from Tone Dogs, Denio Solos, Curlew, Billy Tipton Memorial Quartet, Pale and (ec) Nudes, FoMoFlo, unreleased tapes.. disc 2 is a collection of 5 versions of 'Salvatore'. A good intro to Amy.

DEROME, JEAN:  Navre - AM 038CD - £12

DEROME, JEAN:  Je Me Souviens - AM 044CD - £12
A stunner. Jean and a big band rehearse perfect Exotica, 40's, 50's and 60's generic band music, TV music, Latino, Hot Jazz, early rock, Tangos and other perfectly realised slices of memory, transformed by wit and intelligence to be much much more than pastiche - this is also HI FI, microgroove music and so perfectly realised I had immediately to listen to it again. A gift - I hope Jean mines this seam some more.. That's 2/3 of the CD (44 mins) the rest is a collection of 'game' improvisations with 2 all-star bands. Phew.

DEROME, JEAN:  The Beast Within - AM 048CD - £12
Music for dance with Joanne Hetu, Pierre Tanguay, Diane Labrosse, Rene Lussier and others.

DEROME, JEAN et les DANGEREUX ZHOMS:  Torticolois - AM 061 CD - £12

DEROME, JEAN /JOANE HETU:  Nous Percons les Oreilles - AM 054 CD - £12

DG 307:  Collection Souvenir Box - DG307 BOX - £30
3 CD's and book in a hand made wooden box with sliding lid and burned brand title. DG 307 were, along with the Plastic People, one of the essential voices of the Czech underground. These represent their collected works. DG were less 'musical', less like a rock group and more radically amateur; a lot of experiments with sound and structure, with dominant text. An acquired taste, but living history.

DICK/BRENNAN/PATUMI:  Aurealis - VICTO CD 052 - £12

DIDKOVSKY, NICK:  Binky Boy - PM 003 - £12
Compositions by Dr Nerve boss and Fred Frith Guitar Quartet member, for multitrack, duo (w. Mark Stewart) and ensemble (+ Frith, Lussier, Howell) electric guitars, many styles and none, characterised by precision, energy, complexity and full exploitation of the electric mutability of the instrument. Cutting edge; a substantial entry in the lexicon.

DIE KNODEL:  Die Knodel - RECDEC 64 - £12.50
9 piece Austrian Ensemble who play tightly composed and nicely articulated dance/concert music somewhere between contemporary and armslength jazz with a lot of film influence. This is a highly accomplished and impressive piece of work, much better than their first, full of very sharp performances and nifty arrangements; light on its feet. And songs

DIE KNODEL:  Verkochte Tiroler - RECDEC 34 - £12.50
A large rock chamber group of mixed Bassoon, Harp, Trumpet, clarinet, violins, voice, bass, guitar and voices. Unusual and excellent arrangements of varied and well composed pieces. Hard to place. Unusual and well worth listening to.

DIE KNODEL:  Panorama - RECDEC 74 - £12.50

DIE, TRIP COMPUTER DIE:  Die, Trip Computer Die - ALDTCD - £12
Amos/L.Voag again, this time known as Xentos, with a long awaited album of new songs. With Lepke B. (Lowest Note on the Organ and live DJ), and Bongo Bongo Barrow (The Homosexuals and the Murphys). Unheard at the time of publication, but promises radical adventures in the line of English pop-noise eccentricity.

DIKOVSKY/MACLEAN/VRTACEK:  Flies in the Face of Logic - POGUS 21008- - £12
Pieces by the 3 characters above for virtual and real pianos, sampled, treated, prepared and reconstructed pianos and one dropped from a crane from 100 feet. The Maclean pieces I have to single out for special mention: work of exquisitely integrated conception. performance, construction and subsequent manipulation; this is close to perfection by earthly standards. A lot of invention, thinking and pragmatics all round. Appropriately, 'None of us play piano. This is a common obstacle we shared, took advantage of and each dealt with in our own way'

DIMUZIO, TOM:  Louden - OS CD20 - £12
More from the Electronic drone maestro.
See also ReR.

DJLL, TOM:  Mootootator - SRPD 01 - £12

Expensive and only for those who are much interested. Scarce supply.

DOMACI KAPELA:  Jedne Noci Snil - R 0010 - £12
Legacy of the PPU. An excellent Suite of Songs, with a highly distinctive harmonic signature, fine singing, good arrangements, light but authoritative drums and concise guitar. There is still life in Rock and Roll.

DONEDA/ACHIARY/SAWAI:  Temps Couche - VICTO CD 055 - £12

DONEDA/ACHIARY/SAWI:  Temps Couche - VICTO CD 055 - £12

Live recordings - studio quality - from Mainz, Tilburg and New York, Didkovsky compositions with New Ear (one of the best pieces on the CD), Isso Yukihiro Group, Meridian Ensemble, and his own Dr. Nerve. Fast and furious, tightly composed, devilishly complicated pieces performed with hard rock energy and virtuoso precision. Impressive...

Dr.NERVE.:  Skin - RUNE 70 - £11.50
Pretty unremitting, pretty extraordinary. Complex and gripping group music with trumpets nicely used. Successful deployment of computer controlled drums, approaching at times a techno brink. Memo: John Oswald's Metallica. Goes far enough to arrive.

Dr.NERVE:  Did Sprinting Die ? - CUNEIFORM 55002 - £11.50

Dr.NERVE:  Beta - RUNE 26 - £11.50

DUMITRESCU, IANCU:  Au Dela/Monades - EDMN 1002 - £11
C. Au dela.. new work for string orchestra, Monades, previously unreleased versions of electrocord work. The three works by Ana-Maria Avram, one for chamber orchestra, one for Dumitrescu's 'Hyperion ensemble' and one for prepared piano (A-M M), percussion and tape, fall into the same musical realm. Especially interesting is Zodiaque.

DUMITRESCU, IANCU:  Pierres Sacrees/Harryphones - EDMN 1003 - £11
Pierres is a new work for prepared pianos and metal objects. Grande Ourse for 2 bassoons, prepared piano and percussions is also new, Harryphones - previously unreleased versions of the work available before on Romanian electrocord.

'Galaxy' is a new work, for 'Harryphones' percussion & micro-processing, 'Movemur' a virtuoso soundwork for 3 contrabasses and percussion, 'Reliefs' for 2 orchestras and piano, 'Memorial' for string quartet and 'Basoreliefs' for orchestra. Each is a gem, each keeps right on top of its moment with no uneccesary note or tone, each tunnels deep into the inner quality of sound. Innovative and profound. Great works.

DUMITRESCU, IANCU:  A Priori/5 Implosions - EDMN 1006 - £11
5 pieces: three new works by Iancu (two for chamber ensemble (with electrics) tracking sound to its furthest lairs, and one for Orchestra) two by Ana-maria Avram, one for Orchestra (de Sacrae - an indispensible classic) and one for Tape. A Great CD.

DUMITRESCU, IANCU/AVRAM, ANA MARIA:  Ouranos, Gnosis, Orion I, II, Swarms III, Labyrinthe I - EDMN 1009 - £11.50
Pieces for Tape, Percussion, 12 cellos; Double Bass, 3 groups of Percussionists, String Orchestra, Strings, Amplified Percussion by the extraordinary and uncategoriseable Dumitrescu/Avram team. Pursuing the intimate grain of sounds through the directed inspiration of performers who somehow produce music while uncovering it, escape control by going through it. Movement and stillness. Even in the storm of percussion (Orion) is a slow centre.

DUNAJ:  La La La - R 0009 - £12
New work from the overlapping parts group. Simple ingredients locked together in slightly counterintuitive ways that make cyclic flat rhythms with songs over the top. Distinctive.

DUNAJ:  Rosol - PM 0002-2 31 - £12
Excellent

DUNAWAY, JUDY:  and the Evan Gallagher Little Band - AMF 1036 - £12
With a lot of classy guests, extraordinary songstress and guitarist JD breaks as many popsong rules as she can think of, to great effect. Sharp, funny, musically interesting, good songs. Drummer EG fits like a glove.

EGG:  The Polite Force - POCD 1844 - £16
Japanese reissue of the best album from this seminal and too much forgotten group. Egg score with their mixture of Soft Machine influenced instrumental extensions, highly developed, non-dilettantic (Stravinsky influenced) compositions, impeccable performances and their careful attention to timbre and dynamics. This release also contains 'Boilk', in 1970 an exemplary piece of tapework. Highly limited.

ELLA GURU:  Morbius - UNDER 003CD - £12
Ella Guru is an italian 6 piece (includes part of NORMA) who play an intriguing selection of original compositions, complex arrangements, not-quite-kitchy covers and strange cultural references and hybrids that are imaginative, funny, surprising and enjoyable. Excellently executed and recorded. A lot of fun.

Interesting noise-distort post-rock performances, in a style known better in its Japanese version, but developed long ago and honed over many years by this group in France.

Just when you thought it was safe...Tom and the EX VOLUME 2.

EXILES:  Jon Rose, Tony Buck, Joe Williamson - EXILES 1 - £11.50
You trembled at Slawterhouse, now GASP at Exiles: violin, electronics, samples, drums, contrabasse. Too many big beats for jazz, too fast for speed metal, too musical for it's own good, too many jokes for serious music, more adrenaline than SPEED II; drive your gerbils MAD by just pointing at the CD as if you were THINKING about playing it. What is faster than the speed of light grasshopper - the speed of thought that's what. And faster than thinking ??

FAFCHAMPS, LUC/JEAN:  Attrition - SR 56 - £12.55

FAJT, PAVEL & PLUTO:  Pavel Fajt & Pluto - MAMO 40-2 - £12

Six women from Bologne play music composed with echoes of ZNR and Bratsch (featuring: clarinet, accordion, piano, sax, bass, sometimes drums) as well as improvisation in compatible vein. Instrumental and song pieces, nicely put together and with engaging variety.

FAT:  Magnetizer - MEGA 003 - £11
Back on course, the old screaming, hi-chaos Fat rip through 50+ minutes without taking a breath. Nice work in now rare field: real playing high energy electrics/noise, no samples, keyboards or horns. Strap yourself in and turn the volume to 11.

Another interesting and unique packaging concept. This CD with Lorinsky Attila, Double Bass is more uni-directional however, so check 1. first..

FELIX, LAJKO:  Es Zenekara - MZ522 - £12
Phenomenal violinist (and sometimes zither player) with bass, percussion, a great cymbalom and sometimes saxophone and trombone. A variety of pieces from fiendishly fast to languidly lyrical. Linked to folk at the additive rhythm and melody end, but stretched way out from there. Eccentric labour intensive packaging. If in doubt, do try it.

Film Score, much sound work and atmospherics as well as tunes.

FRITH, FRED:  Step Across the Border - RECDEC 30 - £12.50
This is a retrospective compendium of Fred's work over the last 17 years, with a lot of new material, perfectly put together and exceptionally listenable start to finish: an enlightening journey. It's my favourite of Fred's works in recent times. Close composition for electric and acoustic resources, tapework, concrete constructions, songs, sound effects and noise-art improvisations. Guests inc: Iva Bittova, Tom Cora, Jean Derome, Haco, Tim Hodgkinson, Lasse Hollmer, Rene Lussier, Bob Ostertag, Zeena Parkins and John Zorn.)

A collection of film and theatre Music. Some very beautiful compositions and a little radical guitar noise in a collection of 6 full and characteristic pieces. With a prejudice toward romance, sorrow and beauty.

FRITH, FRED:  Pacifica - TZ 7034 - £12
A major composition performed by the Bolognese ensemble EVA KANT under the direction of Fred and produced and mixed by him. A long, permanently mutating and breathing piece, where repetition and mutation constantly entwine; a piece ceaselessly changing and at the same time cycling around a massive immovable core.. Precision of sound, terrific dynamics and unusual scoring..

Live Improvisations

FRITH, FRED/MARK RIBOT:  Subsonic 1 - SR 68 - £12.55
Not together but sharing a CD 50/50. Ribot's first piece (with Shrek) is that rare bird: something new under the sun. Rock bows to Varese in the disposition of blocks of sound, timbre and rhythm without tonal or melodic material intruding. I just can't praise this highly enough; a great achievement. Then Fred's acoustic piece is a gem, with a degree of subtlety and mastery of technique that is an unalloyed pleasure to listen to...and then he rips into an 18 minute electric guitar/sound composition that's a classic. All told this is a pretty essential purchase.

FRITH, FRED/RENE LUSSIER:  Nous Autres - VICTO CD01 - £12

GUBAIDULINA:  The Seven Last Words - S.GUBAIDULINA. - £12
3 really excellent pieces by Sofia Gubaidulina, one of the most interesting new music composers in USSR. In order: for Chamber Ensemble, Orchestra, Electronics. Highly consequent composition, inventive and to the point. ORDER BY TITLE

GUH:  Flog - FLOG - £11
Strong and beautifully recorded with raw and rich sounds, this comes out of the far edges of Jazz (Sun Ra, Charlie Haden, Liberation Music) with 2 great drummer/percussionist, Tuba basses and a lot of low horns playing composed and rare music that refers strongly to the inventive elements of experimental rock. This is a remarkable piece of work in my opinion and even a bit of a discovery.

GYSI, WADI/REICHEL, HANS:  Showdown - INTAKT CD 02 - £12
Live recording for Guitars, Daxophone, Cello and Hammer in Zurich and Tokyo. Such orchestration and diversity of style and timbre is difficult to attribute to what amounts to two electric guitars (though Hans's exquisite handbuilt Daxophone is arguably a new instrument tout court). Plenty of treatments, but above all a breathtaking musical accord and inventiveness between the players - and a fearless mastery of rythmn, noise, lyricism, harmony, surprise. Will be a classic.

H-LEGGED SALLY:  Slow Up - SUBCD 024-46 - £12.55

H-LEGGED SALLY:  Killed by Charity - SR 69 - £12.55

HAFLER TRIO, THE:  Greenaway Economical texts - SR 73 - £12.55
Based on and with soundbites from 'The Prisoner' McGoohan's classic series. Mildly Zorn-esque assembly but more Shea's own. Usual New York suspects, including Zeena Parkins and Marc Ribot. Interesting and listenable work, sharply put together.

HAIL/SNAIL:  How to live with a Tiger - FM-025 - £11.5
Further adventures of HAIL's Susanne Lewis and Azalia Snail. 11 songs - richly instrumented with immanent CHAOS turning into sense. Interesting and extreme arrangements.

Between ambience and techno and open jazz.. with participation of Frank Rothkamm, Elliot Sharp, Thomas Peter Fey.

HARTH, ALFRED:  Sweet Paris - FFM 0291 - £12
1. Alfred's tribute to the city of Paris, part sound- documentary, part music montage, part soundtrack; a continuous event, nicely assembled, involving quite a lot of spoken word (Alfred's 'Heaven over Paris'?) as well as both studio and live recorded musics and sound manipulation. One of a kind.

HARTH, ALFRED & QUASAR QUARTET:  Pop Ending Eye - FFM 0493 - £12
With Simon Nabatov (piano), Vitold Rek (Bass) and the great Vladimir Tarasov (Drums). Straight ahead energetic Jazz.

HARTH/COOPER/MINTON:  State of Volgograd - FMP CD 57 - £12
Improvised pieces from a 1991 concert in Esslingen. Starts a bit dry but then gets more interesting fast. A lot of good keyboard work and unusual drama-music sections. Interesting.

HAT SHOES, THE:  Differently Desperate - RECDEC 41 - £12.50
This is Bill Gilonis, Tom Cora, Catherine Jauniaux, Charles Hayward, assembled by Bill with occasional guests inc. David Thomas, Amos, Chris Cochrane, Hoboken Rythmn Kings, Tim Hodgkinson &c. with a collection of songs.

HAVLOVA/HAVEL:  Little Blue Nothing - F1 0021 25 11 - £12
Voice, Viola da Gamba/Tenor/Alto, Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, bamboo stems, knitting needles, organ, silver cups, small drum - gives an idea. Quite minimal, quiet, atmospheric, not songs. Nicely done.

HAVLOVA/HAVEL:  Hata H - VI 0005 2911 - £12
Strange, quiet, abstract; sound constructions for, variously: bowls, viola da gamba, prepared gong, harmonium, kettledrums, violocello, piano, voice, treatments, fragments of baroque, melody, rythm....interesting.

HAYWARD, CHARLES:  Switch on War - SUBCD 0017-40 - £12.55

HAYWARD, CHARLES:  Escape from Europe - LSR 001 - £11.50
Recorded and released in Japan, ex This Heat drummer (in case there's anyone who doesn't know) Charles Hayward performs both old and new material with his usual power and flair. It's good to have a document measuring his current programme, now well honed and integrating tape seamlessly into realtime singing and playing.

HEINZ WENDEL TRIO:  My Foolish Art - DC4 - £12.50

HEINZ, HERB:  Failure - IST 001 - £12
10 imaginative songs, well arranged and performed, not quite pop music, but not quite anything else either. Eccentric and musical, not a revolution but a well made, well thought out, substantial piece of work.

HI SPEED:  Eroika Con Animac Plenetico - CMDD 0022 - £14.99
Extraordinary slice-merge of Picchio Dall Pozzo, Etron Fou and ZNR style fast-cut strange experiment, snappy rhythm, bizarre recording, high energy, multiple event compilation. Rich and strange- and totally convincing...massed horns, great drums.. a 70's record except.. except.. was.. it.. ever.. this.. good? Anyone familiar with the era evoked will find this a philosophical and hyper-real experience (it's the nineties - that's where the philosophy comes in). For anyone not familiar with sources it's a revelation: more music for your money than you can imagine possible in the face of Marx's maxim, when history repeats it might be great! Japanese pressing.

HIRSCH/WEINSTEIN.:  Haiku Lingo - RERE139CD - £12

HOAHIO:  Happy Mail - AMO HOA 01 - £12
First release on their own label by HACO, Sachiko Matsubara (Ground Zero) and Koto player extraordinaire Michiyo Yagi. 33 minutes in a nice package and extremely rare limited edition Japanese release.

HODGKINSON, TIM:  Each in our own thoughts - WOOF 0016 - £11
Six pieces, including the legendary unrecorded last Henry Cow piece (here as 'Hold to the Zero burn, imagine') a string Quartet, 2 works for small ensemble, 1 for samples and multiple horns and 1 for electronics. Featuring Dagmar Krause, Lindsay Cooper, Chris Cutler, Guy Segers, Dominique Weeks, Bill Gilonis and assorted trumpet, flute and string players. Thoroughly through composed; a remarkable musical statement that absolutely defies genre coding or classification.

HODGKINSON/HYDER/PONEMAREVA:  The Goose - MEGA 004 - £12
Improvisations. (in fact mostly, except, Begnagrad, Vojvodina)

HOLLMER, LARS:  The Siberian Circus - RESCD 502 - £12
Compilation from the classic out of print 5 LP's. What to say about Lasse? That he's one of a kind? That he writes tunes you want to listen to over and over again? That his is a combination of the experimental and the architypical, the carnival folkmeet and every mortal's existential solitude? These are songs and instrumental pieces that will haunt and caress. For soul and body

HOLLMER, LARS:  XII Sibiriska Cyklar + Vill du Hora Mer - RESCD 512 - £12
The 2 classic LP's reissued.

HOLLMER, LARS:  Tonoga, Fran Natt Ideg, Vendeltid (dbl) - RESCD 517/18 - £16.30
For the first time, the three complete CD's plus 7 bonus tracks. Indispensible and long awaited. Nice booklet too and a good price.

HOLLMER, LARS:  Vandelmassa - AYAACDT 1093 - £12.50
New and old but so far unreleased studio recordings from the incomparable Lars Hollmer. With old friends from \ Samla. Another classic.

HOLLMER, LARS:  Andetag - KRAX 10 - £12
A new release from Lars is always news. With guests including Hans Brunisson, Michel Berckmanns, Wolfgang Salomon.

HOLLMER, LARS:  Looping Home Orchestra - VICTO CD 024 - £12
Includes Fred Frith and Jean Derome. Great tunes, performances, arrangements, spirit. Intelligence and emotion - as we should expect from one of the great figures to emerge from the last 20 years of the 'alternative' music community.

HOLLSINGER, TRISTAN:  Sketches of Probability - CAI 009 - £11

HOMLER/WAEGEMAN/FAJT:  Corne de Vache - VICTO CD 047 - £12
Live (Radio) recording of their Victoriaville performance, with guest Koen van Roy (saxophone). Quiet, melodic, slightly 'oriental'. An acquired taste.

HOMLER/WAEGMAN/FAJT:  same - LOW 002 - £12
Charming, minimal, collection of music-slices. Homler's 'Japanese' vocalising, Fajt's beautifully shaped drum riffs and Waegeman's tastefully layered Guitar/Violin/Keyboards make a unique soundprint, touching sometimes on a more clinical version of Iva Bittova or Aqsak Maboul.

HOPPER, HUGH:  Hooligan Romantic - FOT HH1 - £12

HOPPER, HUGH:  1984 - RUNE 104 - £11.50
The classic 1972 record reissued again, with additional track. The long sound-experimental and abstract sections are a tribute to the possibilities of the bass guitar, and still fresh and inspiring: exquisite sounds intelligently deployed, at once hypnotic, abrasive, engaging. Interspersed are post Soft Machine band pieces (John Marshall, Pye Hastings, Lol Coxhill, Gary Windo, Malcolm Griffiths, Nick Evans) which are fine, but very much of their time, and to me dated in a way that the other pieces are not. Recommended.

HOPPER, HUGH:  Carousel - RUNE 67 - £11.50
A solid and convincing record, with many of the old Softmachine qualities of compositional interest and high standard performance in evidence. Enjoyable and consistent. A rare music these days and hard to pull off as Hugh does here.

HOPPER, HUGH:  Meccano Pelorous - WMAS 6 - £11.50

HOPPER, HUGH/ALAN GOWAN:  2 Rainbows Daily - RUNE 77 - £11.50

HOSOKAWA, MASAHIKO:  Like a Shimmerng of Hot Air - BELLE 96306 - £15.50

HOSOKAWA, MASAHIKO:  Midas II - BELLE 96284 - £15.50

HUG, ERIC:  Versatir - t-n-a 0058 - £12
It's many years since Eric's limited edition but excellent LP came out, so this CD is a welcome reappearance. Here Eric plays all manner of percussion and prepared percussion, joined by Erich Tiefenthler on the entire flute family unconventionally played and electronically modulated. Disciplined and organised and not following any genre rules, this is engaging, organic, unusual and entirely musical.
